They don't allow adult avatars, because people under age view the site and can see the avatars. With the adult artwork it get's blocked, unless it's marked improperly.

I'd still be somewhat happier if we allowed users to have a "mature" avatar (still with "generally acceptable bounds" on content) as well as a general purpose one; only available for users > 18 and only viewable by users > 18 who choose to view mature avvies.
That should help ease any issues a bit, although I suspect we'd still have 15-17 year olds pushing bounds. ;)

Out of interest, is it only (implied) sexuality that's an "issue"? i.e. Does anyone have a problem with (implied) violence on avvies?

I don't think violent avatars are bad. Violence is all around, from videogames and TV, so if there are extremely violent avatars out there, let them be, unless you start getting tons of complants from them. Anyway, that idea about having muture avatars is a good idea, but I think there should be a way to figure out or impliment a way to block out adult avitars, so it shows up blank or covered up. As long as it isn't to adult. Althought I have no clue what to adult would be.

I agree, having a "mature" avatar option would help. Or even just being able to filter them.. Personally I don't believe that violence and sexually explicit scenes deserve to be in the same catagory of ~Adult~  Having it just be "mature" and not mature seems to be a good compromise.

PS: No I do not believe that sexual art, yiff, and violent art are BAD.. It's ART!! :P I just think that the issue of user avatars (If they are able to be scene by the public generally) is an issue that is a bit more in the "gray" area of things, and should be thought out more.

I really doubt a lot of people will be happy to know they have generic or default icons on their page for appearance sakes, specially to those with filters/non registered/not logged in

That's what I was thinking. I think that a simple solution would just be to not allow avatars depicting realistic nudity (toon stuff is fine because it doesn't show nipples nor naughty bits), sexual situations, spooge, or gory images. (A little Tom and Jerry violence never offended anyone).

Avatars should have to be kept to a PG level, since we do have 13 year olds running amuck both here in the forums and around the site.

Actually that's exactly why I didn't make the suggestion, I mean if data isn't sanitized before being put into the database, timestamps are too hard, data sorting in the message center is incomprehensible, I'd hate to ask for more advancements on the avatars. :P

Yeah, it looks like it is. Since there has already been talk over the nature of whether you should consider a butt shot with no visible genitalia as adult (see earlier in this thread), I'm not going to bring it up again.

However, I would suggest this as yet another item to be looked over by the admins (if it hasn't been already). That way people won't find the need to go combing over the site and reporting anything that they consider borderline.
