Hmm hmm. I'm pretty bored right now...ok uber bored x.x While surfing the net, I saw a banner mention animal crossing for the DS. I've sampled this game a little, when my brother owned it. And..well...after about 45 mins to an hour tampering around with it, I had came to terms that you do a whole LOT of...nothing in this game.
So comes my question, for maybe I'm just not seeing it. Why is AC such a big deal?
Note: I'm not trying to bash the game.

Animal Crossing is popular for much of the same reason that games like the Sims are popular. They have no strong story to tie the player too, leaving it far more open to the player. This gives you a stronger sense of control over the happenings of the world in which you are playing. So people who are middle class wage slaves working in Corporate USA after a day's hard work and being bossed around by Suits are given a chance to run things the way they want things to go.
Not to mention the seemingly endless variety of things one can do in those kinds of games. Many games in this genre (Animal Crossing especially) have time based events making every day, every hour, different and if you don't want to reset your clock, you have to play at all those times to do everything.
Plus these games are horribly addicting. Just look, you played for nearly an hour before you realized that what you were doing was pointless and trivial.

I dunno if the Sims something to compare it with [then again, I never touched that game, only heard friends talk about it], but as for AC after dealing with Nook's chores or jobs (whatever you wanna call it) you're let go without any hint on what to do or how to really get started. ( that's how I felt anyway). Granted, when I was done with the jobs, the store closed on me and I was stuck just running around, shaking trees for the time I played.
As for spending an hour playing it, I sorta tend to do that with any game I try. Spend at least that amount before judging it. I tend to hate people who judge a game after 10 to 15 minute gameplay x.x.

I compare them on the basis that both are completely open ended as to what you need to do to "win." And both are life simulators, although the Sims is far more realist and Animal Crossing not so much.
I have not played AC for the DS yet, as I am without a DS to play it on, however I did play the GameCube version of it that my roommate had and after spending something like 15 straight hours playing it I vowed to never touch it again for fear that I would not get away.

Heh, I wont mention then that I have almost always decided wether I like a game or not after about five minutes of playtime. But then again I have yet to not like a game since Superman 64 (that game was appalling).

Now I've never played the GameCube version, nor have I even seen it. Before the DS version, I was always curious on how that game worked. I feel there's a difference between them yet plenty of similarity.
From what I could tell from the DS version, you'll fish, sell what you catch. Write email to the characters in your village, get mail back (I think..). Shake trees and either get an item or have a hive of bees to come at you. (the highlight of my experience XD. I laughed a bit at first, then I felt bad). That's pretty much it from what I saw. Is there any difference in the gamecube version?

R@WR JOO D0N'T G!VE G@MES A CHANCE!!!111 SAME ON YOU!!
Kidding, sometimes I feel like I'm torturing myself on somegames. I just try to see if there's a bit of hope that's deeper within, instead of five minues XP.

Nope, sounds about the same there. Except you can build up your house and put stuff in it on the GC version. Probably just didn't get to that feature when you played though.

Actually you do, I just forgot about that part aswell. Yes you can put furnature and such into your home and I think pay to make it bigger. Also, though I couldn't figure out how, I think you can design certain things with the tough screen.

The Sims is fun. A freind of mine actually made a survivor Sims, with rewards for the ones that had the least amount of 'damage' for things like leaving them in the pool with no ladder. :P

my wife plays the sims 2 on the pc religiously...i swear she must have some kinda god complex or something...
Not my type of game personally. I find stuff like that mind-numbingly boring. I played the sims on the ps2 once...i somehow got addicted despite the fact that n the back of my mind i hated games like that.
See...im an FPS, arcade racer, action freak myself...and a big nintendo loather :P
But yeah, not my cup of tea but i agree i think people like these sorts of games because they get to play god in a sense and well..what human being doesnt enjoy thinking that he or she is a god of some kind? I guess it all depends on how much of an ego you have? :P

I love Animal Crossing. This game is not for people who don't like to collect stuff. I play it every day to see what furniture Nook has in that day, and in the DS version, you can sell EVERYTHING.
flowers, fish, furniture, bugs, fossils, ... don't think you can sell letters. But for the most thing, sell seashells first. Then once you got 500 buy a fishing rod. Fish is the main money maker in AC.

Best collecting game ever? Katamari Damacy. Insane fun to play, trippy to look at and addictive as crack! And, you dont need no stupid Nintendo system to play it on! lol :P

Wait until February. There is a new game coming out then called Chibi Robo (http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/chibirobo/index.html?q=chibi%20robo). Got a chance to play it back in December at a gaming expo and I spent five hours standing in one spot playing this game. Really addicting. You are a little robot (hence the name) and you go around cleaning this family's house. It is strangely fun, and I really enjoyed it. However, it is for GameCube, so you still need a "stupid Nintendo system to play it on."

Yep, which means it wont ever be as good as Katamari. Not just because its on that abysmal excuse for a games console the GC, but because NOTHING can be more fun than rolling a ball around and getting as much stuff to stick to it as possible while surrounded by an enviroment that looks like something out of an LSD-enduced dream from the mind of Hunter S. I wouldn't judge it just yet since it hasn't came out or just because it's for the gamecube. Yes I agree Katamari is great and addicting, I should know I own both games, and no one knew such a simple game could get so popular. The same can possibly be said about this Chibi Robo game, you never know.
I give the gamecube more credit. Sure out of the three systems, it's not the best graphical system, but you know, graphics doesn't make a game good. Look at this xbox 360, everyone brags about the graphical capabilites and such. But what about gameplay? Well...everyone seems to turn their heads to that question. Gamecube I believe tend to try and focus more on fun and gameplay than just merely trying to push their graphical limits. {which is why I'm patiently waiting for nintendo's revolution. X3 }

I do not believe graphics will ever again be in the question of what makes a game or gaming platform great. Not since Katamari Damacy with its 10-poly people. However for a gaming system to be viewed as good it really needs some hit games. As it stands, GameCube is severely lacking in that department. Its best selling games have either been ports from old systems (Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil 1) or later been ported to other consoles (Resident Evil 4). So far it is has dropped the ball on hit games, especially with games like Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Legend of Zelda is a everything needed to make a sure hit, and somehow they screwed it up with Wind Waker. Luckily Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is going to rock the house, and Chibi Robo seems a sure hit aswell. Now if only it wasn't so late in the console running for the GameCube to have such hits...

The GC sucks and always will suck because its simply a piece of crap! lol
No, i know graphics alone do not make a good game but they help!
The main problem with the GC and anything Nintendo related for that matter, is their constant need to feel like they have to be all "family friendly" and shit. Like, just LOOK at the GC. With its stupid purple and yellow controller! It looks like something out of a kindergarten play box!
And the games! Urgh! Fucking Mario and Zelda and fucking pokemon?!
The GC sucks because like everything else Nitendo does these days they aim too hard to be all kiddie friendly, instead of making GOOD adult games they keep rehashing the same old kids shit over and over.
Yeah, its had a COUPLE of adult games but like that other guy said they have long since been ported over to other consoles or were ports from other console games to begin with!
Nintendo needs to pull their heads out of their asses and start acting their age if they ever want people like me to buy their stupid kiddie-aimed products.
And that folks, is what really grinds my gears! lol

I dont understand what the big deal is with the 360 either. I dont even think the graphics are that great. Sure they are smoother, sharper and faster than anything else right now, but it isnt a HUGE revolutionary leap forward like we saw when the ps2 first came out. The leap forward from PS1 and N64 graphics and gameplay was huge, but with the 360 its just like, a large step forward at most.
Alot of the games on the 360 are also out for all the other consoles as well, which makes it seem even less pointless to get so hyped up and excited about it. Its a decent system i suppose and shows off some of the elements of next-gen gaming that we can come to expect to be using when the PS3 comes out. Like the wireless controllers and shit like that.
I would buy a 360 but it would still only be a secondary system to me. I wouldnt drool over it or bragg about it to everyone like some of these fanboys seem to be doing.
Urgh, but that damn revolution...god...why cant Nintendo make something decent anymore? I mean, what the fuck is up with that stupid-ass controller?!
Gamers dont want to dance about, swining their arms around like a retard to play a game! We wanna sit down in our armchairs in comfort and not have to move for 3 or 4 hours at a time! If we wanted to get exersize we'd actually go outside! We dont wanna have to work up a sweat playing some video game! Thats why we play games in the first place cos we are lazy bastards! lol
I dunno...PS3 will be the only thing to get REALLY excited about this year.

From what I can tell, the Microsoft and the 360 are just trying to be ahead of the rest. I don't know what they are fully trying to prove, but I'm willing to bet that 360 will probably go the way of the Dreamcast given time. Microsoft is just trying to hard to push the system, and really it's not working well.
Nintendo has offically grabbed my attention again with their newer system. Ever since they had stated that on the system you'll beable to play games from GC all way back to the orginal NES games. That's what I call playback compatible [which is another dumb issue 360 lacks. -.- god microsoft] I won't judge the controller, it looks rather different yes, I doubt there's as much moving around as you're stating. In fact the controller (remote?) looks rather more simpler than how other controllers have came out looking for the past number of years.
In response to your previous post. Nintendo being more "Family friendly" is probably what makes it unique from the other systems. They started out family friendly and looks to want to stay that way and why not? Those overly protective soccer moms needs something to look forward to  I think Nintendo is trying to show that you don't need an ass load of teen and up games in your library to be a good system. If you want that kind of stuff, well you do have playstation and that huge waste of space..er I mean xbox

lol, well at least we agree on the x-box and x-box 360 issue. But i wouldnt agree that being family friendly makes something unique. It emans, more often than not, that your just trying to be conservative and not piss anyone off with any cool new ideas. Some of the best games out have gotten the polititians panties in a twist in recent years. It just stinks of lazy-ness, not unique...ness...lol
But whatever floats yer boat.
But yes, i also think that microsoft is just trying to get a head start on the PS3 , because for all the good points the 360 has (which isnt that many at the end of the day) i do think it will die a premature death just like the dreamcast did because the PS3 will just blow it away with its sheer power and future possibilities!
However the DC died because of different circumstances other than just having its ass kicked by the PS2.
People didnt trust Sega after their fuck up with the Saturn and the Sega CD. Also, they were the first to introduce the online home console multiplayer thing (NOT microsoft, although some hardcore x-box fanboys will argue that they came up with the idea first despite the x-box coming out like, 2 years AFTER the DC *rolls eyes*) and they invested alot of money into it and that kinda killed them since consumers didnt trust them anymore.
Then the PS2 came along and that was the final nail in the coffin i guess...
Microsoft doesnt have past mistakes to worry about like Sega and the DC did. But i do think they have released a sub-standard "next-gen" console a bit too early. Which just leads ya to beleive they are just trying to earn a quick buck before the PS3 comes out and blows em away. *shrugs*
But in any case, im going back in time and buying myself an old DC to play with! I always wanted a DC even after the PS2 came out. Just when they announced that they was killing it off it kinda become rather pointless to buy one. But now its cool to have old consoles just for novelty value if nothing else! Plus, DC games are still a blast to play and are still alot more fun then nearly most new PS2 or X-box games! Wouldnt ya agree?
IMO they are, since having a DC is basically the same as having an arcade in your living room! And we all know how much fun arcade games are to play! Just this way you dont have to worry about digging into your pockets and putting change into the damn thign every time you want to continue! lol
Plus, since the DC is so old now, the games and accesories are dirt cheap to buy!
Hell, if the DC hadnt of been killed off the way it was, i think we'd still be playing new DC games today...

I have to say that I agree about the DreamCast being an awesome system, and a damn shame it flopped. Like Grave said, its because people lost faith in Sega after their previous consoles where so flawed. But also becuase Sega jumped the gun and tried to beat the tech train. Sega CD was the first console to not use cartridges for games and it came out in the early 90's. The GameGear has Gameboy Advance quality graphics 10 years before the GBA was released. And the DreamCast had the first built in online capability. The problem with each of these was that technology wasn't ready for these kinds of advances, and neither were consumers. The Sega CD came out at a time when people were still very happy to have cartridges for their games. Cartridges could be used to store save files, and CDs require the consumer to buy extra peripherals just to save. The GameGear was HUGE. That thing was comparable in size to the X-Box, and it was supposed to be a handheld system. Plus the GameGear was infamous for its poorly constructed cartridge connector that would stop functioning fully after repeated use. And finally the DreamCast with its built in modem when noone was really ready to go online. Computer games were just begining to experiment with online game play, and most console gamers where satisfied to just sit at home and play with their friends.
Now with Microsoft, I think you are going to see a simular loss of trust in the company as you did with Sega. However Microsoft can afford to throw out a few billion dollars trying to work out how to make a decent console, Sega couldn't. I would not be amazed to see sales records of the X-Box 720, or whatever they decide to call their 3rd console in that line, flop even more than the first X-Box sales.
As for graphical improvements between generations, well we haven't been in the new gen for very long. Game developers were basically told to hold onto games they were producing for the X-Box, spice them up some, and make them launch titles for the 360. While this makes for a larger launch library of games, the games themselves aren't too impressive. Given time you will see improvements in quality more and more. But you are right, the launch difference was minimal. The 360 is an extension to the ladder that is graphics, not an elevator to the top floor.
But I don't really care because I am going to get a Revolution. I can not afford my console of choice (PS3) and I'm obsessed with classic games, and the Revolution gives me all that I could ask for in that department.

lol, ahh...the beloved Game Gear...my second console ever!
Damn thing would eat batteries like a hungry american at a fast food restaurant! But you are right, it had GBA quality graphics way before its time...hell, when i got my Mega Drive (Genesis to you yanks) i couldnt see much difference in the graphical quality between to two systems.
Yes, i got a Mega Drive AFTER i got a Game Gear. Hey dont look at me like that! Blame my parents for the fuckupery not me! lol
But yeah, my Game Gear packed up before i got my Mega Drive. I could still play the thing and see the graphics and all that, i just couldnt control anything. The digital D pad control had failed on me. But apart from that everything else worked fine. Didnt know if it could be fixed at the time though so it just got chucked away. I was probably only about 10 or 12 at the time.
So, how come you cant afford your console of choice? If it is the PS3 you want then just save up for that! Whats the point in wasting money on another Nintendont product if you really ultimately want the much better PS3? Besides how do ya know you wont be able to afford it? No one knows how much it'll be yet.
The backwards compatability of the Revolution holds no attraction for me. And again just makes me hate Nintendo even more because yet again, they are stuck in the past re-selling all their crappy old games and not doing anything new or moving on or breaking any ground like everyone else! I mean come on! Its the next-gen of video games and you still want to play those crappy old 8-bit games?! What is wrong with you people?! They were good 20 years ago! Its time to moooove ooooon! lol
Seriously though, your logic baffles me!

Quite simply what I mean by "cant afford" is that I have around $800 to my name, no job, and am in college. If it costs more than $400, I wont want to spend that large a percent of my money on it. Also I wont have to pay for "those crappy old 8-bt games" since they are free to download, saving me more money.
As for why I love retro gaming... well its all the stuff I missed out on. My first system I could play on was a Super Nintendo that my oldest sister bought and I rarely played. I didn't really get into gaming until mid-life of the N-64 when my grandparents bought me on for X-Mas (they have since given me $15-20 a year). There are a lot of great classic games I have never gotten a chance to play for more than a few hours at someone else's house.
So I'm hoping my father will get himself a PS3 for me to mooch off whenever I come home from college.
Plus the controler for the Revolution looks like it could lead to some awesome stuff. Can you imagine a sword fighting game with that thing? And it has that add-on port at the bottom to allow any sort of controller at all, that just rocks.

Actually, no i cant imagine playing any type of game witht hat controller because its so damn stupid! Like i said gamers dont want to jump about like kids to play a game we wanna sit in our comfy arm chairs with our wire-less controller being lazy asses.
If we wanted exersize we'd actually go outside. That controller is the stupidest thing i have ever seen!
Urgh, i fucking hate Nintendo!

Yeah I've pretty much got that point, lol.
Its time to moooove ooooon! lol
I see it as this, you cannot find games that are as fun or that can hook you so much like the old-school games can. Where you had to actually sit there and fight to get to that next level, without the benefit of a savepoint [unless it was an rpg type game]. Where your goal was to strive to beat your last high score. Now and days, every game has to have some kind of plot, some kind of story, some kind of drama and such...unless it's like Madden or something. It's cool at first, but damn not everything needs a freaking story! And games that do have a good story, unless there's like a crap load of extras to unlock and have fun with, the game is like a one-way street. I have quite a few ps2 games that i've played through once...and that's it. Where as can go an dplay an nes game I've play hundreds of times, still have fun with it, still can sit there and play it for hours.

Hence why im going to get an Dreamcast. Its not too old and the games have decent graphics as well as super-fun arcade-style gameplay. :P
I dunno about old school games getting my hooked. To me they are just frustrating and a total eye sore, hence why i dont play em and dont know why people love em so much still.
But anyway...im gonna go out and hopefully buy me a DC now ^-^

*misses the dreamcast* Just a bit of random information. The dreamcast only really "died" in america, and in fact that Japan was still making games for the system. I believe pretty good games at that >.>. Lucky Japanese.

I recommend a came called Power Stone 2. It's sorta...like a fighting game...I guess. Hmm..I dont' know how to really describe it though, but it's a constant action game with loads (and I mean loads) of weapons to use on your opponent(s).
