Default How To Make A Tail That Is Cost Effective?

Hello,

This is my first post on FA and have come to get some advice. My end-goal is to create a full suit that resembles a teal fox, however I am in college and stretched for cash. Can someone provide a cost effective material list on how they made their tail. Additionally, is there a way to have the tail raise at an arch?

Thanks,

If you want an arch, you just need to give you tail some shape. You can use wire, cardboard and stuffing, or any sort of material for the base and then cover it with fur.

Finding teal fur might be difficult, but you could try buying white fur and airbrushing it or dyeing it with Kool-Aid. I've not tried either method, but they're supposed to work.

There's a nice picture in this thread about darts and how they make a curved tail.

Aaaand... My suggestion for fur is to save up for something of nice quality. Syfabrics.com has some great longer fur that is only $20 a yard, and that is WAY more than enough to do a tail. You'd even have some left over for ears ^_^

The airbrushing white fur is a good idea if you can't find the teal, although that would mean investing in an airgun and paints, which would actually cost you more

***EDIT***
Ok, did a google search on teal fur and you ARE better off buying the white fur and an airbrush gun cause apparently that color is really hard to find >.<

One of the sites I went to tells how to dye the fur... which is seen here:

this is how I do mine:

coat hanger, fur, upholstry foam (raid an alley couch)

should be anywhere from $7-$25

I bought a horrid furry jacket in a charity shop and made a tail, with tons of fur left over. The only fur being sold near where I lived at the time was faux chinchilla for £18 a metre. SCREW THAT.

I'm currently making my head with duct tape and wire, cheap for the skeletal part of the head, not sure if its a good way to make the thing but hey, its cheap.

I personally don't see what the big deal is, ever heard of taking a sewing class? Many places that sell fabric has them at little to no cost. I know this because I asked, you can get free info about making tails for costumes .

dont. ever. it doesnt work well ... at all.

you'll spend more money on the tape and wire than you would on the foam.
