Well, besides incorrectly defining multiculturalism as some kind of scary part the modern zeitgeist that is forcing people to conform to other people's cultures when in fact it is by definition "the appreciation, acceptance or promotion of multiple cultures" (you are in no way obligated to conform to it through letter of law or society), you then jump to conflating multiculturalism with unregulated immigration, which is lunacy. I thank you for inventing these imaginary things like "training people to become embarrassed of their own national identity," as if that has ever occurred in any country outside of minuscule traditionally left-leaning circles, and then citing the great politician David Cameron,a pillar of virtue in modern Britain, of course, and Nicolas Sarkozy, who actually wants to recognize the Armenian Genocide. That sounds a lot like recognizing the trials of another culture. Hmm.... Perhaps you have some quotes from these men that say "enforced multiculturalism is a failure," ignoring the fact that I have not mentioned it at all before this post, nor suggested it? With unchecked conservatism you get more Breiviks and England Defence Leagues and tearing down minarets and banning hijabs and soon you reach the level of your enemies and realize it far too late to return. I hate this dog whistle xenophobia.

You know those little car-window clip flags? Shitloads of them. No idea where anyone's even getting them, either, I don't see them in stores or anything. But I want one :0 (Before I get one though, I'll be making my own jolly roger. Keeping with the times of internet piracy, and all that.)
The problem with people like you, as your post suggests, is you don't recognise state multiculturalism programme even exists. That there is only one type of multiculturalism, the real kind, and that this state multiculturalism is just that. The kind where a foreigner moves into your street and you learn about each others cultures, trading and respecting each others ideas and customs. The type of multiculturalism that has existed for as long as people have travelled.
The type of multiculturalism I'm talking about are programmes implemented by European countries that overwhelmingly favours the immigrant over the resident. It's a one way relationship, where multiculturalism means the country accommodates the foreign culture; rather than us accommodating each other. But what our countries leaders are quickly discovering, the people you have chosen to disregard; because they don't comply with your way of thinking. Is that if you do everything in your power to accommodate a foreign culture, if you seal them in an impervious box of so called respect, that integration is far less successful than if they just got involved with the local culture.
State multiculturalism is anti integration. It encourages people to live in a bubble where they behave like they're back home, because the state is all too willing to accommodate all their homeland cultural needs. Thinking it's a sign of respect. When in reality the best way to encourage integration, is to simply assist them in settling into the local culture. Not making the local culture look like xenophobes, just because they may prefer their local one to this foreign one.
And I know you've been indoctrinated with the state enforced form of multiculturalism, when your reaction to someone simply stating they respect other cultures; but didn't want it pushed onto them was to accuse them a racism. That's pretty much a standard tactic of state multiculturalism, to scream racism at everyone for even the smallest signs of none compliance until they obey

I'm not really patriotic or nationalistic, in the sense that I don't like my own country more than any other, and I don't care for people in my country more than I care for people in other countries.
However, I do like being told I sound very British. I tend to get told I sound very British by other british people.
Hell, I enjoy tea and biscuits too.
What what, tally ho p_o
READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE - the survey polled 513 people, not 102. The 102 were simply the ones who had the flags.
It's a survey, not a fucking census question. Geez.
I see it hasn't stopped the predictable Little Englander "OMG multiculturalism is teh evilz" bullshit coming out though. It's fascinating how you've twisted the article to claim it says something it didn't. And as far as how the whole question of "waving an Aussie national flag = racist" came up, I refer you to the 2005 Cronulla riots where "patriotic" Australians decided that the best way to express their pride in being (white) Australians was to
...get down to North Cronulla to help support Leb and wog [sic] bashing day...Bring your mates down and let's show them this is our beach and they're never welcome backIf this behaviour is supposed to be "patriotic" and "pride in one's race", you can fucking keep it.At 13:45, another two boys (from Bangladesh) were surrounded by the crowd, and had bottles thrown at them, with the crowd repeatedly chanting “Fuck off Lebs!”, with the boys subsequently being able to escape by car. Chants and slogans such as “Fuck off Lebs!”, “We grew here, you flew here”, “Aussie Pride”, “Fuck off wogs!”, were repeated throughout the day by the crowd. The crowd also attacked the police by throwing beer bottles.
The opinions expressed in this message are bloody good ones.
Do I try to discriminate against those of another race or deem than as inferior? No, I do not. And word is over here, laws are changing which involves English citizens to not only accomodate (which is great in my book) but also take part in what they do. They want us to, as well. They're definitely in the wrong, I did not ASK to be a part of that.
Comrades, our ruse is up!
Yes, we never went democratic, we're still all Nazis who seek to erect the Fourth Reich through the EU front! And no one will stop us to further our Nazi agenda by spreading understanding among nations, prosperity and the ideals of socialist democracy! MWAHAHAHAHA!
Heil Merkel!

It's these people that I want to see gone. It's ok if they have "foreign" beliefs and ideas, they're welcome to stay. Its these radicals and extremists who are the problem. It's not ok. It doesn't matter where you're from or where you are, this behaviour is simply not ok.
Is it foreigners or is it ultranationalists? I can't completely relate to the situation over there because America is different from Australia and the U.K. obviously, but I do honestly get a bit leery of anyone prominently displaying flags (the more flags the leerier) on a non-holiday, and I'm a white guy with American ancestry tracing back to at least the Civil War.
The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.
Now,
let's go play, together...Together under the
clearest of blue skies.
My problem is not with multicultralism or foreigners in general. If you'd all read my posts, I said that multicultralism is a good thing thing and my problem is with forcing it upon others who do not want to live under a different culture and committing crimes in the name of it.
Well this is quite illustrative. A right-wing thinktank has a poll which portrays Muslim students as dangerous extremists. Quite the face of xenophobia. For some more information on the survey, try this article.
Extremists exist, we get it. But you're using language which accuses Muslims in a much broader sense of engaging in "cultural imperialism", without a shred of real evidence. This is dangerous and divisive.http://trendsupdates.com/uk-combats-the-spread-of-radical-islam-in-its-territory/

Different things for both. National pride is the least problematic. One has an attachment to one's countries and likes to share in their successes. That's mostly harmless. My issue with that (and gay pride and similar things) is when it becomes pride in being X. We have a campaign here called "Proudly South African" to encourage buying local goods and stuff. You can't be proud to be a member of a country or sexuality because it isn't an achievement. It's like having pride that you drew an Ace from a deck of cards, it's just pure luck.Originally Posted by Commie Bat
Patriotism however tends towards people seeing their country as one that can't do wrong and that it is the best in the world. This of course necessitates seeing other countries as lesser, which is the roots of prejudice. With that it's not surprising that the Australians flying flags are more likely to be racist. Patriotism loses sight of equality and the arbitrariness of life. Someone isn't inferior just because they come from another country and they aren't better because of it either. When you realise that a person who is patriotic about his country might have been born in a different one, where he almost certainly wouldn't have that same outlook, you realise that the entire concept is shallow.
Pfft flags.
Needs moar hockey jerseys.
I'm still looking for this.
Not a knock-off one either.
I'd be flying the Australian flag upside down if I had one.

I all honesty, I find any racial pride to be stupid.
Are Africans proud to be black? Fuck no, because that's not their cultural identity - their customs and traditions are.
A flag should not pertain to any sort of race, it should symbolize nothing but nationality.
