    Default Titanic's 100th

I don't think I've seen a thread for this so far, and the Search results couldn't find one either. Kind of surprising, considering that the anniversary is tomorrow.

Admittedly, I wasn't very interested in this until recently, but the whole thing - the stories, the myths, the loses, the wreck itself - can be pretty amazing and interesting.

I live just down the road from where J. Bruce Ismay (director at White Star, one of the survivors) was born and Stanley Lord (captain of the SS Californian, long believed to have ignored the distress calls from the ship) is buried.

It's a tragic story, once you really think about it.

(I get the feeling that this thread already exists elsewhere, apologies if so).

I'll try and keep this short. It sank at 2:20am (5:18am UTC/00:15 EST) on the 15th of April, 1912.

Does anyone have anything interesting to add to this?

Actually I am questioning our schools more than the kids. They are only as good as the education they are given....Even then they are all complete fucking idiots, meh I don't care I make money off of idiots like that.
    Will be back someday.

Many of the people were highschoolers just like me, and i can tell you the education system is lacking right now, but they've had enough to know stupid stuff like this. (im in honors classes, maybe that is why i know.)

lol Yeah, I read about that. I mean, it isn't something taught in schools... but there are things that people should learn on their own.

It reminds me of something I overheard a little while ago. Two teenagers were talking and one was like "Yeah, like, I was born on September 11th. I think something bad happened on Sept11th, but I don't know what it was." ... REALLY?!

Although there was dog kennels, and somebody did attempt to rescue said dogs in dog kennels, only two dogs were reported to survive the sinking.

Back on topic: i read an article once saying that the ship that passed by the Titanic thought the emergency flares were fireworks but that was years ago and i may be wrong.

If they were Canadian, like I assume you are, I'd prioritise concerns that instead directly relate to your own country. Like how only a quarter of your citizens know who is their head of state. You beat the Yanks.

Why are we still caring about a ship that sunk 100 years ago?
I mean looking at the amount of major ship disasters and all the war ships that were sunk.
I have the feeling its just because of the cheesy movie and it being rereleased in 3D. Making money of the same junk.

Well, considering we are just north of the US, and many of their TV channels are shown up here and their news is all over them all the time... it is silly to not know about 9/11. Especially the 'war on terrorism' as Canada had troops over in Afghanistan too. :P

I never really cared for the boat either. Not when the sinking of the Maine still has me all riled up.

You know I agree with you on the remaking the movie part. But seriously man it was the biggest ship of that time period (I think someone tell me if it wasnt please) and it was rumored that nothing to sink it. I mean come on man alot of people died in that time when the boat sank and we shouldnt forget it. Yes we should make our peace that alot of people died but we shouldnt forget what happened on the Titanic. Its like trying to forget what happened with 9/11 or with the Hindenburg.

Because the Titanic is a timeless lesson about hubris.

I grew up in the city it was built in, I used to get the train past the docks to get to work. I've met people who watched her getting built, whose parents worked on it, whose family died. It sailed past the house I grew up in. It was a tragedy. Many of the people who died were third class Irish passengers. I honestly think some of the jokes going around are awful.

Edit: A lot of the stuff going on in Belfast marking the centinary has been incredibly poigniant, respectful, interesting and sad. It's been done very well.

I am, however, annoyed at the movie re-release and memorial cruise. They both feel a bit slimey to me, like a money making scheme instead of respectful remembrance.

I've seen some very interesting documentaries celebrating Titanic's engineering, where a group of modern engineers attempt to recreate parts of Titanic like the bow section and the anchor using materials and methods of the time - certainly building the ship was a mission in itself!

I'm surprised they're making it in 3D now.

Hopefully they'll actually see the iceberg now.
