Sometimes I think the loneliest feeling in the world is to be really excited about some idea but unable to find even one person interested in hearing about it, much less actually able to contribute something to the conversation from their own thoughts about the topic. I mean I realize I'm a geek and my conversational skills suck, but really? Between IRL friends and online communities I can't find anyone who thinks the same things are cool that I do?

No, you had it right the first time, they would discuss things with you nitpick every detail of your opinion and then rip the guts of your post out and organize them into different categories of wrongness.

I used to have that problem with my work, both in just home projects and my philosophical ideas. THen I learned how to properly translate my thoughts to help others understand and draw them into the conversation.

What kind of things are you usually interested in? Maybe it's a case of wrong place, wrong time. You'll probably find that there's a dedicated forum, somewhere on the internet, that discusses those things you like.

Lol did you read the first three replies to this thread before making that recommendation? Although my personal experience hasn't so much been with my posts getting ripped to shreds as it has been hearing crickets chirp as the thread slips off the front page with no serious replies.

I've attempted that repeatedly. Sometimes I find people who are kinda vaguely near me interest-wise. I've never met someone I'd describe as a kindred soul, though.

The forum I cut my internet teeth on was a small fraction the size of FAF, but so much more aggressive and nasty that it took me a while to understand why anyone would really consider FAF bad.

Although there is a camaraderie in smaller forums that doesn't seem to show up real often in bigger ones.
