Tanks are terrible at taking out targets which require accuracy.

The 125mm SB gun on the T-80u & T-90 can hit a one square foot target, at 2,500 yards, and a six inch target, at 5000+ yards with guided shells. Though I'm not disagreeing with you about the use of them for the Olympics; just the accuracy.

I didn't know that. I've only ever seen them as a "we need to get from point A to point B and kill a bunch of people and buildings in between" It doesn't make much sense as a fortifying weapon to me, especially in the city.

But now I know it can be super accurate.

I just re-read the book over winter break. I can't wait to see how they handle Beorn.

And Smaug.

And the eagles.

But now I know it can be super accurate.

That's true for tanks from the first world war, where their guns were more like howitzers (they didn't even have rotating turrets for most of the time) and used as another method of suppressing troops in trenches, and the multiple machineguns fitted to the tank did the accurate work.

But after technology and tactics had evolved a little, tanks in general have always been relatively accurate, even in the old days. The German King Tiger comes to mind, where its gun is a variation of the 88mm flak cannon fitted to the turret, a gun that was originally best used to shoot down planes.

It's amazing to think they're only getting better and better.

So did the tiger 1. Fun fact about both tigers other than being horrendously unreliable. If either tank was going full speed at a t-34 and the t-34 was doing the same; almost 100% of the time resulted in the tiger 1/2 being disabled. Due in part to the terrible welding and overall design of the tigers.

I hadn't read it since middle school either. It was surprised by how action-packed it was. The Hobbit seems to have a bit of a reputation for being tamer than the Lord of the Rings, which I don't think is quite deserved. It doesn't have nearly the scale of LoTR, but it's got so many fighting and battle scenes. They're going to be some pretty action-y films.

Aye, the Tiger wasn't as great as media always seems to portray it. In fact, most later german tanks were only really good for defensive purposes due to their lack of mobility, and other problems, such as their sheer weight destroying bridges that they're trying to cross. Their speed didn't help either.

Though I think the Panther was their best. It was faster, better armed, better protected, and proved to be a lot more lethal on the western front but it still suffered from crippling issues. Soviet tanks seemed to be a lot better, really.

A lot of people can't stand Tolkien as an author. His entire modus operandi of ignoring characters in favor of background detail is pretty much the exact opposite of how most people think a novel should go.

I think I first read the Hobbit when I was 7 or 8. Which makes me feel old since that would be before some members of this forum were born.
