13 year old girl sentenced to detention and community service "or cut off your hair"

a 13 year old girl in utah made friends with a 3 year old kid and cut off a few inches of her hair.
she was then sentenced by a court judge to 30 days of detention and 150 hours of community service.
the judge would agree to drop the 150 hours of community service if she cuts off her own ponytail in court right then and there.

what do y'all think? insane? just? or another case of "WTF utah?!"

and besides, what kind of community service could a 13 year old girl do? (a different source actually said she was 11 so im not sure about that part)

The teenager and an 11-year-old friend were referred to juvenile court for cutting off the hair of a 3-year-old girl with scissors in March and for harassing another girl in Colorado by telephone.

I do not see any sympathy to be found. I think it is a fair example of crime and punishment. It is becoming far too common to allow children to do awful things with no repercussions.

For example, it is a sad thing that yesterday I had to chase away a neighborhood child who was teasing someone's dogs and throwing rocks at them, despite the mother watching who did not have any interest in stopping her child when I confronted her.

also, it is still the job of the parents to teach their kids whats right and whats wrong. this isnt the job of a judge.
and while humiliating her in court like this definitely wont make her do this again i still think that it was a little extreme.

I think its a very effective way of showing the girl what it is to be like through the victim's eyes and just how humiliating it is. That should give her a good reminder that bullying is terrible.

If I went and grabbed some woman right now and cut off her hair against her will, I am pretty sure I would not be getting community service as a punishment for my crime.

As far as 13 year olds doing community service, I was cleaning up beaches at that age. There are plenty of things 13 year olds can do.

The punishment seems completely appropriate to me, and I'm not one for being a hardass.

It is a shame that a judge had to make it happen rather than the girl's parents. That's the parents' fault though, can't find fault with the judge for that.

as i said before, she obviously doesnt have a proper grasp on what is right or wrong. you cant just tell her to cut her own hair off. thats not justice, that is humiliating! sure, she did something wrong. bzut that is no reason to piss on her in public like that while her parents are at fault because they failed to raise her properly!

There is not enough information to determine why this was pulled into a court of law and not handled properly by the adults of both sides involved. The point is that it was pulled into a court of law for one reason or another.

True it is normally the parents place to discipline the their kids. However if the parents aren't doing it and letting them get away with anything while brushing it off as 'kids will be kids' it then falls to the schools and courts to to take over weather the parents like it or not. I don't know what is up with the current generation, but when I was thirteen I understood what was right and what was wrong because my parents raised me right. If some thirteen or even eleven year old girl doesn't know the concepts of right and wrong her parents f**ked up big time raising her.

I have to agree here. I am sorry but humiliating a girl that young inthe ways they did won't teach her anything but that the law is cruel and she is going to mistrust everyone. Cutting hair is one thing striping and jailing her are a bit far and emotionally damaging. I am for punishment but a line was crossed

A strip search isn't so out there even in juvenile detention centers since they don't want contraband to get in. As long as the parents were present and it was done by a female officer, the parents have no claim against that. The judge may have over stepped over the line a bit, but I'm also under the impression that the parents may be exaggerating a bit as well.
