Voting - Rant
Everytime I hear about new legislation being proposed that uses the words "Voters ID", My Blood Boils.
Everytime I hear the words "purge" and "polls" within the same sentence, My Blood Boils.
Then When I hear the pathetic excuse presented for such actions or changes, I want to bite someone's head off......
The news was on, and First it had talked about some newish statewide(MN) legislation tightening the requirements to vote that would be on the ballots this fall. when this was proposed, they claimed it was to cut down on "voter fraud". Voter Fraud! If i remember correctly, this issue was brought up in congress, and there were only 300 cases of voter fraud from the ENTIRETY of the United States over 10 YEARS that they had as evidence. That would AT MOST be the difference in perhaps a mayoral election, but it was NATION WIDE from the last DECADE. 300 votes being used to prevent millions from voting. an outright abomination! It wouldn't be as bad if it wasn't so obviously politically motivated- as it would strike at seniors and the poor, two populations that overwhelmingly vote DFL!! And those who proposed this legislation, were, or course, the republicans in control of the state legislature.
Then, later on in the broadcast, it talked about another "purge" of the polls in florida! I can't even recall the reason they gave for this one, but it was something along the lines of them being felons or illegal immigrants. It seems like they continuously purge the polls in florida! By they, i mean, or course, the Republican governor and those who seem to control the lists of voters. heck, 6 months before the presidential election of 2000 in florida, at least 80,000 voters were purged from the polls. the VAST majority of which were democrats. :/ and for those who don't know, that's AT LEAST twice the margin that bush won florida by, some 30 thousand or so. You could imagine my absolute delight at hearing they wanted to purge like another 80k voters WITHIN 6 MONTHS of the presidential election this year, which i thought there were laws against!
Undermining the key values of democracy that this nation was built on to retain and aquire power.... just sickening!
