For most people, consequences are the only thing giving them 'morals.' If there were no consequences, then there would be anarchy. There are those few that have a morality that just is, but they are extremely few in number. Religious people just set higher consequences in the hope of preventing said anarchy.

So, I'm late to the party, but I agree with OP. Morals and ethics are derived from our experiences and our environment (society, etc.), not necessarily religion, although that is one influence.

Not only that, but some religions have been used to do immoral things. It all depends on the person, not their beliefs per say. (I say that cause sometimes it is their beliefs, meaning what they made them to be)

I've been kind generally and normally put people before myself, even strangers, but don't believe in god, Jesus, or any religion. I used my own philosophies to create my system of beliefs.

I don't see the relation between Atheism and communism, I usually see them being associated by people attempting to demonize Atheism by attaching it to something negative. The same with people who try to claim Hitler was an Atheist, despite him historically being Catholic and demonstrating religious association on numerous occasions.

There isn't really one, but the idea's been deeply ingrained in the US zeitgeist since the McCarthy era. However, not counting the whole "Cult of personality" thing, Communism is simply a kind of secular government. (The non-secular ones, Theocracies, being far worse.)

There's actually a pretty huge link. I don't know about the specifics of Bolshevism or Maoism or any other specific variations of communism, but I read the Communist Manifesto. Marxist theory, pure original Marxist theory than inspired all the rest is actually very anti-theistic. Marx calls religion "The opiate of the people", talks about how it's used to enforce monarchic rule and oppress the working classes and thus how it has to go for people to be able to truly work together in their secular goals.

Communism in it's purest form is not just secular (atheistic) but anti-theistic. Stalin focused a lot of energy on wiping Roman Orthodoxy (their Christianity) out of the picture, expropriating church property, dealing with religious people during the purge.

The comparison is very applicable.

There is nothing in Atheism for communism, absolutely nothing. Atheism is a lack of belief in god or gods, that's it, everything outside of that is dependant on the individual.

I might as well say Nazism = the Catholic church. Why not? Hitler was a Catholic, he said he believed he was doing gods will by exterminating the Jews, Nazi uniforms contained Catholic themes. The Catholic church had a open relationship with the Nazi's, they didn't condemn what they were doing.

Therefore the Catholic religion leads to Nazism.

Oh wait, there isn't anything in the Catholic religion that leads to Nazism. Just because Hitler was a Catholic and used the religion to justify his actions does not mean all Catholics are Nazi supporters, it was simply the religion he happened to have. Yet you have the cheek of saying because communists had atheist leaders; that atheism is link with communism.
