What's a way to describe the furry community to make it seem totally innocent?

Unfortunately, being a furry can be difficult when you have psychotically religious parents who don't even want you to find out what a vagina is until you're 24. They're not strict, but they sure as hell don't like perverted stuff. Obviously I've kept the majority of my furry and yiffy stuff on the downlow, but I really reaaally want to go to a Furcon, and I don't know how I would describe what that is to them to make them think it's a good idea.

Ideas I had were to say it's a community of simple animal lovers who like to dress up like animals, but do you guys have any suggestions?

There's really no way to make it seem innocent. While your interest and activity in the fandom can be controlled to your likings, looking up anything furry related will still result in less-than-desirable images. There's no way to sugarcoat it.

My way of describing a furry would be someone who specifically likes anthropomorphic animals ( not like, "there's this character in Disney I liked", but actually make their own character or searches for anthro related things). That's it, everything else is an offshoot and the product of a growing/molding community who takes things increasingly further.

If you have not delved into the sexual side of the fandom I believe there is not too much to worry about. If you have delved into it I will say the fandom might just come off as something they might want to know more about. They might learn about the sexual side of this & they will most likely ask you about it. They might ask you if you have delved into that side...

They will most likely know if you are lying, they are your parents they probably know how you act when you do. I mean they are your parents they probably have known whenever you had lied since the time you stole cookies from the cookie jar.

The question here is does this community based around A artstyle mean so much to you to have the off chance of ruining you relationship with your parents.

I think it probably does I have seen people that would not be the same if it wasn't for it myself included. I have people who have cried for the first time in A very long time, because they realized they hadn't really had friends their entire life & he realized that now because he had finally made some. I have seen A lot of people who if not for the people in the fandom would be sad, mopey, shut in, introverts.

I think it means A lot to you & if they hold hatred against you for that side so be it. I do honestly hold disdain for people who do like yiff but if not telling them you are A furry denies you so much happiness then that is unjust. let them know & let them judge you because you deserve to be happy.

Hhmmm, that's an interesting question. I think the best way to approach it is to remember that for most people even things they find unusual, even bizzare, they can get used to after time. When I told my folks I was gay it was mostly just a case of waiting it out for a while whilst they got used to the idea of having a gay son. Slowly you see the little signs that they're starting to normalise it, the brain is very good at coping with new situations and after a while they just accept the new reality without even realising they've done so. Also I'd recommend being honest and confident when you tell them, kind of a no big deal attitude with a smile on your face. Say something like this:

'So I've gotten into this cool new hobby you may not know about. It called the furry fandom and it's for people to meet up, hang out and take on little animal characteristics. For some it's just wearing ears and a tail and for others its wearing these incredibly detailed costumes. I guess it is a little silly but that's part of the appeal, not taking yourself to seriously. I've made loads of friends doing it and it's a lot of fun. I can tell you more if you like.'

Obvioisly not this exactly but it's an idea of how to play it cool. Just make it sound like what it is, a fun thing you like to do with others and just a bit of harmless fun. Just be prepared that it takes people a little while to get used to things like this so just leave it with them and they'll get used to it. I wouldn't mention the yiffing, i'm sure they'd prefer not to know and it just between you and whatever fur you want to have fun with.

Hope that helps, good luck :p x

Ah yes, another thread where OP have religious parents.

Nothing is innocent, apart from young children before they learn to lie to their parents.

24 and still live with your parents? Gotta expect restrictions, especially if they are religious.

Recommendation: Move out whenever you can. That way you won't have parents hanging over your back, breathing down your neck.

Try explaining Rule 34 and that EVERY fandom has "those people" in it. Compare the furry fandom to another fandom that they would approve of and show that there's pr0n of that ALSO. Do your best to show that the pr0nny side isn't your thing.

    ...even if it is.

"We celebrate anthropomorphism - you know, like those animals from Robin Hood and Zootopia. Some for artistic reasons, others take a step further, but in general, it's kind of an umbrella term for anthro enthusiasts and artists."
The most neutral, understandable and unbiased description I can come up with, really.

Introducing your fandom to somebody by claiming "It's not about porn, dude, believe me, and I'm totally not into it for porn!" will probably lead to results opposite from desired x)

Furries are nerds. Say furries are nerds for cartoon animals, and you want to go to a nerd convention, like comic-con, but smaller and more specific. Assuming they're flexible enough to like animation, have them watch Zootopia.

Though if you need some example of furry costuming stuff, I might suggest that you fudge it a bit and go with bronies: Equestria Daily - MLP Stuff!: Cosplay Compilation #71

Bronies are generally a clean fandom unless you actively look for "clop."

Furry fandom is what you get when people are animal lovers, fantasy/scifi fans, and cartoon/art fans and you mash them together and get the furry fandom.

    That's literally why I'm a furry.

    Furry? Innocent?

You're human. There's no innocence left. Unless you're a child, and haven't learned to lie to your parents yet. Now THAT is innocence.

When talking to the general public, I explain that furries are fans of 'anthropomorphic' or basically, cartoon animals, and that the unique highlight of the fandom is that people create their own characters, and then create art devoted to these characters. I'll highlight community, the creativity, the work done for charity, and how people use their character performance (fursuiting) and the development of their personal characters (fursonae) to make lifelong friends, build their self-esteem, overcome traumas and personal flaws, and refine their artistic skills. When I have time, I will slip in heartwarming personal stories about the furries I know and neat things that the community has done for both furries and non-furries alike.

But, if I'm being honest, there are things about the fandom that will automatically make religious fundies twitchy, even if you omit or gloss over the stuff that bothers normal people. Even without broaching the "after dark" aspects, you are still dealing with a fandom that is two-thirds LGBTQ (strike one), encourages people to use their imagination (strike two), and blurs the boundary between humans and non-humans (strike three). In addition to smelling faintly of idolatry, anthropomorphism itself is a threat to the doctrine of Dominionism, and fundies may furthermore interpret it as a tacit endorsement of the theory of evolution--and don't even think about what'll happen once a fundie realizes that fursuiting allows for--and yea, even encourages--gender-bending!

So, if your parents are hardcore fundagelicals, be prepared to have them absolutely flip out for utterly irrational reasons that they may even be able to articulate--so, be ready for them to offer contradictory, confusing, or non-sensical reasons for reflexively disliking the fandom, and be ready for them to move the goal posts when you manage to debunk their arguments or address their concerns.

If they're more mainstream evangelicals, you might have a chance, but you'll still have to play it cool, in my estimation. I don't know your parents, but if they're "psychotically religious," my tendency would be to de-emphasize the concept of the "fursona," de-emphasize the idea of RP et cetera, and of course, feign sweet, gentle, wide-eyed innocence about the fandom harboring any of those poor, sick, sad, icky-icky homosexuals and such. I'd also reassure them that the fandom is home to many devout Christians--which is entirely true, mind you.

For the record, I like Christians, but I have absolutely zero tolerance for fundagelicals injecting their retrograde rubbish into my or other people's lives. As a rule, I don't like to deceive people, but zealots and fundamentalists of all types basically make it impossible for people not to lie to them, because they hold those around them to irrational, impossible, inflexible, and often, incredibly cruel standards.

I never told my mom. She figured it out herself because I had nothing to hide and asked me about it. I simply told her that I like the art and enjoy having my own animal character be drawn by wonderful artists and even wear a nice tail and ears sometimes. Now she is curious about it herself and I show her every piece of art I commission and she even thinks about having her own character.

the yiff part of the fandom is just that a part, maybe a bigger part but it's not the whole fandom. Just show/talk to them about what makes you be a Furry -if your into the yiff part, just don't tell them- and you should be fine.

I think bottom line is that every concept you can possibly be into has a dirty side, whether its furry, steampunk, goth, even mainstream shit, and sure, I personally love the furry porn myself, i find the whole tail plugs things super hot, however... there is a huge difference between that, and those people who are in it entirely for the porn, those people who get together and plug each other in murr suits. Unfortunately, because people do not understand furries, those people have given us a bad name. I cherish my suit, i cant wait for my next one, he doesnt even come out of his box unless without care, i couldnt even imagine tarnishing it like that. People corrupt what is innocent and good, it is human nature unfortunately. When i even show off my fursuit, the default response is if its a sex thing. People destroy what they do not understand, and thanks to some fucktards, furries have gotten a bad name. I think even more so since social media has become such a huge part of our every day lives.

However, pertaining to the OP question, being a furry for me is an escape, from my shitty existence, from the reality, from all the awful things in my life, I can be who I want, and feel proud to look at myself through Fuzzy's eyes, because I'm who I want to be, not what the world has made me to be.

If your over 18 or 21+, you do realize you can cut them out & there nothing they do about it?. Because it annoy's me how many parents use excuse that because son/daughter is 8 to 17, There stupid as hell hate is right no matter what.

To me as a whole i see it as "So I'm a freak for openly liking star fox or any anthro in non-furry works".
