As someone who did only original ponies and not true fanart, I had it better than some but still nowhere near as good as if I used anything canon. Any time I’d do my oc ponies I was lucky to get views. Was very disheartening.

Ah what I mean by mindless praise is exactly the "Nice!" or "Good work!" that happens over and over. What you do I wouldn't consider mindless. It was a loooot of work and very time consuming. Take a break for any length of time and things fell apart. It's a lot of pressure over there.
