Your probation was a bit different. It was a 3 day probation at a lower level. Oni is (will be over once the week is up) at a higher level than you. Yes, you will see the red if you're at that level on your own account.

It's a user that is under probation. Instead of being outright banned, they've had certain posting privileges taken away. The red is something of a scarlet letter, to show they're a step away from being banned.

It's not atypical. I know artists who haven't used tablets for year and know how to draw and CG using a mouse. You'd disqualify them assuming they'd use a tablet. I mean the polygon lasso tool was basically one of the best things invented when it came to CG. Again, I'm left handed. I did that...
