Pencils are tough. The trick is to use the right KIND of pencil and a hardcore eraser. I usually use a 2B to start with, and move on from there. And for God's sake, DON'T use a mechanical pencil for preliminary sketches. Anybody ever try working with charcoal? Now THAT'S fun to use. :D

A sketch is fine, maybe toss in some cross-hatching if you can. Concerning a pose, pretty much anything is fine, maybe running or something like that. But he has to look worried while he's doing it. =P

The marks on his left cheek are in a pretty distinguishable lip-formation, so I would say that you're right.
