Selections are key when you don't have a pressure sensitive tablet. You don't really need to smudge either, if you know what you're doing. Feathering selections also gives some softness to areas, as well as just knowing how to change your layers to work for you.

The thing is as well, I wouldn't be surprised even if those that "left" still use their accounts and just lurk. It's not like there's an activity button that detects their movements.
You don't always have to uninstall. Try restarting the service if you use XP (though I believe this is also available in NT as well). I have this problem occasionally with my WACOM as well.
