It was an old British term. The quartermaster was in charge of alcohol rationing on board military ships. Alcohol was very carefully measured to ensure that there was no theft. The term is in relation to the quartermaster (who would be blamed if the rations came up short) minding his pints...

I go metal detecting sometimes and have found some interesting coins, like a silver 3cent piece from the American Civil war and a seated liberty quarter from 1861. I have several peace and morgan silver dollars.
