A Challenge to all Artists

Mud

Micro Doberman
First off I hope I am placing this in the right place. I am taking this idea from my journal on my FA page and placing it on the forum because I think it is a worthy cause and I want more than just the people who watch my page to get this message.

Too often I see furry artists get into a rut where they just seem to focus on their close friends and other top artists of their clique. Then there are the multitude of furs who seem to get countless numbers of art done for them by many different artists. I am not talking people who pay for commissioned art. My point is there are allot of FA users who love the fandom yet have no real good picture of themselves to show off to their friends. There are probably a few reasons why, maybe the person can't afford commissioned art, or perhaps he or she is just too shy to ask their favorite artist.

My challenge is this, if you are a good artist with a decent following take some time to check out your watchers. Try someone who seems to comment allot on your work, check out their FA page if you haven't and see if they have any artwork of their character. If you find someone who has nothing take the time to do them up a nice picture to show them you see them. The gesture will go a long way.

I have seen many a pointless meme on the FA art journals, lets make this one something that means something to others.

Thank you for your time and please check out my journal entry here. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/756176/

Lol, obvious scam is obvious :V .

Bullshit like this is exactly why artists here cloister themselves the way they do. Furries have this idiot notion that just because artists are kind enough to post their art for free there's no reason why they can't draw for any knob to dishes out a few insincere compliments. Then they piss and moan about elitist artist cliques when the fact of the matter is artists here just get sick of people harassing them for free art all the time.

If you want art and can't be bothered to learn how to draw, pay for it :V .

When we feel we're in a rut we do take free requests on our own.
Simple as that.

But you know what feels really annoying?
When some stranger suddenly acts like you're BEST BUDDIES because you might do something for him for free.

Nauseating.

If a person has spent time given something back... sometimes they don't even have to ask for art, they've been a huge motivational factor by being how they are, and not by asking. Many artists are not mcDonalds restaurents where you can walk up and order them around and get a prepackaged product. I promise that's making sense in my head.

I don't think that's the point Mud was trying to make. I think all She's saying is that artists tend to ignore some of the people that have been maybe following their art for while, or act as if they're "above" their watchers. For example, Blotch is one of the elite artists (I know Blotch is actually two people, but let's not split hairs) who actually responds to comments made on their artwork. However if you look at other big artists out there, they tend to forget about their watchers and just post their artwork, expecting people to bow before their mad skills. Mud is just saying for big artists to make a piece for a fan that's been a true fan, just as a Pro Bono, Spur of the moment type thing. I don't think that's a bad thing. It's just something thoughtful that an artist could do every once in awhile.

It's difficult to reply to everything.
Especially the "that's nice" comments xP I dont want to copypaste "thank you" replies to everything
Spur of the moment
but is this not exactly what it is not, when it is requested?

All this idea was is a show of good faith. If you are an artist and you don't want to do it that is fine. If you are an artist and you think it is a good idea then do it. There is no harm either way. I am not saying ANYONE is entitled to anything. I am just suggesting a random act of kindness, something that I think would improve both the watcher and the artist. I am sorry this turned into a big debate and flame throwing thread.

Did you even read what I said, because this is exactly what I'm talking about :V . Most anthro artists cut themselves off from furries because they're tired of people trying to bum free art off them all the time, it's got nothing to do with elitism :V .

Well, seeing as I'm the greatest artist known to mankind, particularly due to my incredible attention to detail, speed and finesse, I took the liberty of drawing every single character which resides in FA:

Don't thank me just yet because you all owe me $5.

Additional humour: I actually stole that black square, that's how much I draw these days >.<

I totally see where you are coming from. When I take requests, I try to complete the ones first of people who need artwork of their character before those of people who have a bazillion drawings already.

This is a really cute idea but I'd like to see one popular, well-paid artist do this for anyone.
I just don't think they either have the time or care enough to do it.

Here's an idea... draw it and shade it YOURSELF!

Amazing what a little bit of imagination can do eh!?

Interestingly enough, I was pondering about doing something like this a while back. Not exactly the same, but similar. I just never got around to doing it. But I really like your idea. It seems a lot easier than what I had in mind. XD

But yeah! I think I'll give this a try at some point along the timeline. Great idea! :)

That's my tactic. ^^ I'm certainly not good enough to merit anyone paying for my art. I'd actually be quite willing to draw some stuff for folks at no cost, if they would allow it. I've done a lot of it through neopets, as mentioned above. I enjoy the practice, the especially kind comments (lame of me, eh?), and the "advertising." However, I don't believe artists of any level of skill should feel pressured to give out some freebies to strangers if they don't want to. Art takes a lot of effort, time, thought, and material. It shouldn't be thrown about like Tootsie rolls in the Christmas parade.
