Anybody On Here Straight Edge?

How? I am not all that great and the last 3 times I have gone to Walmart, random people have tried to sell me drugs...

As far as straight edge goes, I am not. I pound back coffee, smoke socially, dip on long boring car rides, and drink socially. I have heavily abused alcohol in the past and now only drink when I can pace myself against a lightweight.

Minorities make me nervous. :^)

I knew so many sheltered straight-edges in college. Couldn't bare to watch violent movies, actively shunned anyone who ingested alcohol or drugs in any volume, and of course they were relentlessly boring. Who wants to hang around someone who doesn't take risks or surprise you?

Not all of them were snobs, but most were. "Oh you like hip hop and alcohol...." *Literally looks down their nose at me*

This is the first time I've heard of the Straight Edge movement. If all it means is that we don't use drugs and drink alcohol, then what's the point in creating a subculture for it?

I choose to not consume alcohol, nor to take drugs. Its my personal choice to not having anything affect my sense of judgement.

"Straight Edge" sounds like a group of conservative assholes who mommy told them dont do drugs and dont have sex before your married. :V

Well, I have refrained from posting in here, but seeing some of these replies is a bit absurd.
Wolfnight has it right, Straight Edge spawned from Punk bands, it then turned into a number of posers taking up the name to justify remaining clean.
Now, the majority of the people who label themselves as 'Straight Edge' are some of the snobbiest people I have ever met.
'No smoking, No Drinking, No Drugs.' Who are they to look down on me.
Take it from someone who has tried nearly every drug out there, you do not need a label on yourself to justify not using substances. Drugs ruin lives, no doubt.
With that said, there are a few straight edge people that I have met that are really cool people. The problem is, not many people want to hang out with them.
I will keep my nicotine, alcohol, and copious amounts of caffeine. Fuck off.

Straight Edge was a movement that started in the early 80s as a subculture of hardcore punk, So being straight edge isn't just about being sober, It's punk culture mixed with the idea that you should take care of yourself and not let your mind become clouded, and the sex part hasn't been apart of the subculture for some time, that went towards the hardline subculture

Not straight-edge or, whatever.

I don't like drinking, but I enjoy a night of drinks with friends in good company and ambient atmosphere. But I'm honestly more of a stoner. Just let me go to the park, vaporize a nice bowl, and kick back reading a wonderful book. Hiking is also a fun thing to do! ^w^

Oh, but I digress, I have no qualms with the so called straight-edge people. I honestly don't know any personally but the ones I have interacted with were pretty cool. I was able to strike up worthwhile conversation with an awesome individual. Even while I was enjoying my recreational pleasures Iwasn't judged and I thought it was respectable. But the majority of his clique were another story.

^ This guy. This fucking guy. Listen to this guy. :D (Or girl. Sorry.) Seriously, we need more people like this. Someone who doesn't think like us, but respects our right to think this way. As an atheist, I know how hard those people can be to find. :p

I've been straight-edge since I was 14. Only way to be, to me.

Welcome! Yeah people here tend to dissaprove of or be very opinionated about extraneous labels and certain people groups (the obnoxious ones, at least). Certain topics such as these do tend to "escalate beyond that", but it's all civil discussion. No need for everyone to 100% agree.

...and yes, that is a guy and he's an agreeable fellow. Plenty of others on here like him as well.

Everyone else just happen to be cynical by nature sometimes. Just learn to get along with everyone, no big deal.

Thanks for the welcome!

And yes, I've come to expect that from the internet. That's why I try to keep positive when I'm online. :D Plus I use a lot of smilies. That tends not to work as well, but it doesn't hurt. :p

I can't say I'm very interested in the idea. We have such a limited, tenuous connection to the universe. Our capacity to feel or experience reality is already too limited. Why limit it further?

If that's what some people enjoy, fine. For me I have enhanced my life with alcohol, weed, sex... these have been far more positive forces than negative. They've added a dimension of appreciation for the other things I enjoy... chess, anthro art, mountains, my career.

psst. I also like chess :3

Drank ALL the Coffee!!!

I was joking m8

I know. Just making a point.

I found it interesting that literally anyone, and usually not who you would expect, could be a dealer. I would say that the only consistent trend is that it is usually 20-30 something males selling.

Once had a lab T.A. ask to buy drugs from me. Other than that a rando at walmart thought I was a dealer, and another random from school...

It's best not to do something if one can't handle it.

If you can, though, by all means enjoy yourself.

I read a bunch of comments on judging. Is it judging if the substanance user took said substance into public and directly annoyed said judger (ie. Drunk harassing someone or avoiding someone on something)? I'm fine with those that keep their junk to themselves but those that don't...

Thank you for quoting Death Grips in a straight edge thread. I needed a shot of irony tonight.

Expanding further: I just find people who won't try new things necessarily boring. Ever since college I've loved bending out of my comfort zone to see new ways of life and new sensations. New foods, new situations. I don't know how people can live while actively limiting themselves. Granted I used to be that way.

Wow hehe, "drugs"... I see this being thrown around way too loosely.

(Wikiquote below)
"A drug is, in the broadest of terms, a chemical substance that has known biological effects on humans or other animals.[SUP][5][/SUP]Foods are generally excluded from this definition, in spite of their physiological effects on animal species.[SUP][6][/SUP][SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8][/SUP]
In pharmacology, a drug is "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being."[SUP][6][/SUP] Pharmaceutical drugs may be used for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.[SUP][9][/SUP]
Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens.[SUP][9][/SUP]Alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine are the most widely consumed psychotropic drugs worldwide.[SUP][10][/SUP]
They may be used for effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior.[SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][11][/SUP] Many recreational drugs are also medicinal.[SUP][5][/SUP]
Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation[SUP][11][/SUP] and all drugs have side effects.[SUP][12][/SUP] Many drugs are illegal for recreational purposes and international treaties such as the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs exist for the purpose of legally prohibiting certain substances."

My motto, Just stay far far away from things like "meth" "crack" "heroin" ect. and be careful and responsible, with things like alcohol, MJ and MDMA.

"Entheogens" "Psychedelics" "Hallucinogens" like Mushrooms,LSD,Salvia, ect. on the other hand are very valuable tools to the human psyche in my opinion as long as they are used responsibly and respectfully . They are completely non addictive and have been shown to cure things like depression and other substance abuses.

I personally have nothing against people who are "straight edge" as a matter of fact I commend and have respect for anyone who lives that lifestyle, just don't judge me for being a CuRIoUs KaT :p

To each his own.

I couldn't resist! That verse always cracks me up.

Of course drugs aren't for everybody, and there's nothing wrong with abstaining because of health reasons, family history of addiction, or just plain it's not your cup of tea. That said, I'd say about 95% of my friends are drug users to some degree, and it ain't because I'm a hopeless addict and the only thing I do for fun is get high. It's because many people who use drugs also happen to be open-minded, laid back, introspective, unique individuals with multi-faceted personalities that I feel like I can actually have a real conversation with without being judged or spoon fed a steaming pile of horse shit. Go figure.

I find that drug users like to brag and bitch a lot more than people who choose not to indulge in drugs. I understand their need to self-affirm in regards to doing something that is looked down on by society, but come on.
