Well, from what I know about the history, the internet part of the fandom began rather early in the internet's life, spanning all the way back to when webrings were a popular thing, so somewhere between 1994 and 1999.

yeah I had to google what a webring was and it's existed for longer than I have! it does make sense that a lot of the members of the fandom are older since they're growing up though
