Can you still be a furry if...

You can't wear a fur suit? It kinda a weird question, but I have asthma therefore I can't really even think about wearing a fur suit. I can't even have fur coats around me for long. Can I still be a Furry despite this?

There's no real definitive definition of what a furry is that I have come across, it's more of a self-identification thing. I have been on sites where people full-on roleplayed anthropomorphic animals for years but who never considered themselves furry because they never did yiff. Conversely, I know some people that don't have a fursona or anything but happen to get off to furry porn some of the time and define themselves as a furry, claiming you can't be a furry without being sexually attracted to anthropomorphic animals. Then you have the middle of the road people who have a consistent fursona and do the occasionally internet roleplay or two, the people in regular suits who attend cons to more or less cosplay, and finally the people who like having sex in suits. All that being said, I think you can consider yourself a furry without dropping hundreds/thousands on a fursuit, otherwise I suspect the community would be far smaller than it is.

Thank you :) I was worried a bit there. I consider myself a furry but I wasn't sure weather you needed to wear a fur suit or not. Though it would be cool to have a fur suit of Venus x3 Though Im not sure about the other stuff o.o

Yep. The cool thing about the community is that the term furry can pretty much mean anything from liking cartoon animals to safe roleplaying to all sorts of weird stuff. You'll find your niche in time, though, and what you like and don't.

Yep. That's how I got into the whole thing, doing safe RP and writing SFW stories. I was really into Redwall and its online community when I was younger, and I've always enjoyed things with anthros since. I'm somewhat saddened by the fact that the community has gotten such an overwhelmingly sexual rap since those days.

Most furries don't even wear fursuits due to prices, etc.

Just because you aren't able to wear a fursuit doesn't mean you can't still be apart of the fandom! Though the definition of "furry" seems to be all over the map... I believe the true definition is to just be a fan of anthropomorphic animals. Though some furries might draw "feral" characters more, which means they don't walk around like humans... but they probably have their own personalities and such like humans, in most cases.

It can help some furs to fully get into character when they wear a suit, but you don't even need a character of your own to be a furry if you don't want!

Well, do you like anthros? If yes, then you can be a furry, if you want to call yourself a furry. That's literally it.

There's no need for a fursuit or anything else. You only really need that if you want to call yourself a furry.

On an equal note, it's very possible, and in fact common, to be a furry who thinks fursuits are stupid, frightening or just plain weird.
Just like how not everyone goes to cons, not everyone is an artist and not everyone yiffs, not everyone fursuits.

The base definition of a "Furry" is someone that takes an interest in Anthropomorphic Characters, nothing more. So yes, you don't need a fur suit to be one as it is only an extension of your alter ego. In all honesty, those that take part in this culture should at least know that.

A fursuit is not a requirement but a luxury item. If you can afford one and want one, great! But if you don't have one or don't want one that doesn't make you any less of a furry. Just like you can be a fan of your favorite sports team but you don't have to go to every single home game and paint your face. Some fans just like to take it a step further and some don't, and that's okay.

The answer is YES. Its always yes, I didn't even have to read the OP. The ONLY requirement to being a furry is to want to call yourself one. That's literally it.

Yes absolutely you can be a furry if you don't wear a fursuit. In fact, the scientific research being done on furries over at the anthropomorphic research project shows that less then 15% of furries actually own a fursuit, so it is clearly not required.

I think that fursuits are totally awesome however, but you can always enjoy other furs wearing them to give you an extra sense of immersion at a convention. =)

I don't consider myself a furry, just a guy who likes anthropomorphic characters, art etc. The term furry to me only applies to those who go around in fursuits. To me, a furry is necessarily an anthro fan (or simply an anthro) as well while an anthro doesn't necessarily have to be a furry. I don't mind being called a furry tho. It's pretty much the same

If they were a requirement, being a furry would probably be the fandom with the highest monetary barrier of entry ever. Most furries wouldn't be able to afford being furries. Then we'd have to make a demifurry club for all the poor, suitless souls.

As long as you've got a furry heart, that's all that matters. But not an actual furry heart cuz that would tickle your thoracic cavity.

Sure. All I have to even remotely suggest I'm furry in my entire room is a dragon fantasy book (Dragon Champion: One of the Age of Fire). Then again I'm very jealous of the other furries with those fuzzy and so cuddly life sized (or many smaller)plushies to sleep with....I'd love to have one of those........*sigh*

Oh right the question

I can't see why not ^_^ like many others have said being furry is entirely up to you and how you define it
