I'd say cats smell better than a majority of people. If they're an outdoor cat or can be taught to use a toilet too, then there's no problem.

Litterboxes should be cleaned DAILY. Use a clumping litter. Put litterboxes in places away from general foot traffic. If your cat just stinks in general it might be their diet. If you have an unaltered tomcat, then you deserve to suffer from the tom-stink - get toms altered early in their lives, idiots.

Never had a problem with an inexplicably stinky cat that I couldn't resolve with attention to grooming, diet and hygiene. Though they DO fart, occasionally.
