Colorblindness, if you'll forgive the pun, is not purely black and white. There's infinite levels in-between the two extremes of color-sighted to blindness. As a matter of fact, a pretty high percentage people are at least slightly color blind; even if it is to one particular color only. Most people who are live their lives and never even notice it.
There's a fairly accurate test for this somewhere around here on the internet...

Being "colorblind" could also mean that you can see color, but you have trouble differentiating certain shades.
i.e. My brother cannot tell the difference between purple and blue. He sees it as one shade.

The reason I brought this up is when I worked in aircraft electronic repair one of the guys was color blind (truly shades of gray) it made resistor color codes and the wires with tracer colors a bit of a challenge for him.
I know I am amazed at some of the art work and the colors used and I thought on him and just shades of gray.

i can explain this pretty well. I can see some colors but most melt into the same vomit colors. Sometimes I am better than others at picking out camo out of some woods better than others. I consider it a blessing.

green/red colorblindness is more common than say Blue/yellow.
Kinda feel bad for the blue yellow ones, Looking up at the summer sky to see...gray.

Yeah, the question is not appropriate, because it's not "can/can't" see colour. I can't see blue's and shades of dark purple, and moderate-to-dark shades of grey just appear as black to me. I can see other colours just fine though >>

I am partially colourblind. 
I see some shades of blue as gray and some shades of purple as brown or gray. The funny thing about it? I don't notice it. I only found out about it after some confusion over the colour of a friends car, then I started looking into it. It may affect what kind of art I like or don't like ( my favourite colours are orange, yellow and red ) and I tend to be drawn towards them, but if it does I think it is only a very slight preference.
Found a couple of tests like what Littlerock had posted, but they already told me what I already knew, plus when I get to blue areas of tests it starts getting really hard. I can't tell one shade of blue from the other. I believe "awfuckit" was a tactic for one of them.

I can provide many many awkward examples of when not being able to distinguish color well screwed me over. You can point it out to me all day and I still won't see it. It really doesn't help when drawing, playing games, and some other stuff. I failed a color theory exam last semester. Didn't give a reason when asked why. I thought she'd find me bullshitting if I said that even if she was an understanding woman.

Mine isn't nearly as severe as you describe, but I remember my colour theory teacher being absolutely fascinated with me. I was his own guinea pig. He made me mix shades of blue until I 'lost it'. It was interesting, but incredibly boring.

My husband however is red-green colorblind. it's pretty interesting sometimes. like a friend has a quaker parrot that looks green in bright light, and red-brown in dim light. Mostly he confuses red and green, and can't see purple. This is pretty frustrating as an artist, since I can't just ask the nearest person 'does this look OK' and get a reliable answer. he's hoping they come up with a way to return color vision soon, he wants to see all the colors I can.

Really? I'd honestly get pissed at that. No seriously, I've gone through my entire life having morons and idiots pointing at random objects asking WUT CULER IZ DIS!!?!?! O{}O as if it's funny. I don't get mad at is so much because it's stupid or offensive, but because of the frequency. You would think people would realize "Huh, he must get that a lot so I won't bother." I've a great deal of difficulty with yellow. Any yellow before the point where it starts to turn orange appears whitish for me. Blue is also a bit of an issue as I have a hard time with darker blues. Recently infact my husband pointed out to me that almost all of my 'black' shirts are infact dark blue. @.@

I could understand the frustration in your case. It hardly ever comes up with me, it's not something I share and in my case isn't something obvious. They only time I knew I had a problem was when a friend said "Uhhh. Actually my car is blue."

Yeah, that's how it happens with me a lot. I don't tell people because I know most are idiots and will make those jokes. The worst was when I was forced to give a critique last semester in color and composition and I said all the wrong colors of someone's painting. I couldn't tell and I was confident in what I saw to be the color I said. I had everyone in the class laughing hysterically and making jokes like middle schoolers after class. To be frank, I told off all of them right there with a liberal amount of profanity, of course. I think I got my point across.
But that scenario was extreme and infantile on their part. It usually doesn't end like that.
I am very proud of my seven.
