I live about 30-40 minutes from an actual city. Some suburbs are crawling in our direction but my home is surrounded by farmland. Hayfields, beanfields, cornfields and cow pasture. My closest neighbor is 100 yards away. We don't have a ton of acreage but it's enough to be quiet. The actual "town" I live by isn't much to brag about. There are a couple of gas stations and convenience stores and churches, plus the typical things like police and post office, hardware store. Not much in the way of food. To get to the grocery store takes roughly 15-20 minutes on a state route. Movies and restaurants are about the same. It's a 40 minute commute to and from work, none of it on highways.
It's not so far away that you can't get to a concert or amusement park somewhere in the main city, it's just a longer drive to get there. Even to get to a bus route, you'd have to drive to the nearest park-and-ride. We don't have bus service, even in the nearest town. You may or may not get stuck behind farm machinery. Things are just a bit slower here. You're not likely to find a vibrant artist community, many of the people lean towards conservative political views.
I like it because it's quiet here. I can sit on my back patio in the early evening and listen to a barred owl in the woods at the back of our property.
