Well, I can't say I'm the only one guilty of downloading music illegally. >_>

But I never took credit for it, lol.

You know that one song by Metallica? 'The Unforgiven'?

Dude.. that song was totally by me. They fucking stole that... -_-

.. really.

No joke.

Ok, yes joke.

As pepermintrhino said though, I can't draw either. I'm good at writing, so I write poetry, and I enjoy it. When you get honest positive feedback, it makes me feel good. So keep giving me good feedback -- er, I mean, ya, so claiming others' work as your own... it's definitely for all the slackers out there who don't have the ability to sense 'accomplishment'.

I'm tempted to start a discussion of the net utility of piracy in terms of freedoms just to broaden the scope here, but I figure this will be the topic of a new rant.

With the amount of topic hijacking and opinions on this forum, you're right ^^ However, i'm sure it's already been done, try searching it, maybe the results will be entertaining...*searches*

I am all for thread hijacking.

Piracy is just the applied form of freedom of information. Free information means LEARNING, even when the information is something generally considered trite or worthless (like, say, furry porn). The author's INTENT does not matter, because the author cannot predict the impact the work will have on the viewer.

DEBATE

or pointlessly split the thread, I guess that works too.

Hey, as a music writer, I am torn. I want people to learn from me, but I'd like to have the music I write appreciated. I mean, iunno what you do as art, but what would you do if someone broke into your house and stole nothing but every piece of art then gave it to all of his friends. Iunno, I'd be pretty happy actually. Because my signature can't be erased without risk of a lawsuit. However, drawings/prose can be erased veeery easily. So piracy of music is one thing...but of drawn/written art? Maybe that's something that should be adressed? It's hard, this matter is one big grey area...

Except "stealing" is a bad metaphor, because it's more like "making copies".

And I am actually totally fine with people ripping off my work (which, incidently, is mostly writing & pixel art) even without credit, because... hey, whatever, I put it out on the internet, I don't care. If I don't want something of mine to be potentially ripped off, I don't post it to a public place. Or a private place.

well...you can't shut Fchan down I guess..otherwise it'd be shut down by now -.-"

At least Fchan has some semblance of control in the form of it's DNP (Do Not Post) list--one can contact the admins and have yourself put on a list such that any works of yours posted there without permission will be deleted by the moderators.

However, there's still 7chan...

Funny how posting pics with obvious warnings not to misappropriate the works (i.e. "Do not steal/repost/alter/whore out to chan sites") seem to encourage their violation. Not posting porn seems to work much better :)

Just a bit of necromancy here.

There was some worry about if someone else can register copyright for your work.

http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wccc

Who Can Claim Copyright?

Copyright protection subsists from the time the work is created in fixed form. The copyright in the work of authorship immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. Only the author or those deriving their rights through the author can rightfully claim copyright.

In the case of works made for hire, the employer and not the employee is considered to be the author. Section 101 of the copyright law defines a “work made for hire” as: *lists reasons, you'll have to read the link*

.... so this "guy stole my artwork and claimed copyright" nah doesn't work that way.
