Current situation in Russia

In regards to this situation, there had been much talk about different values. I really would like to here more about the russian perspective to life. What things are important to you and how they see there own role in the world. Is there really such a big cultural difference to the west, or are there probably some commonalities.
Which exactly Russian?) There are 140+ millions of us, and there are plenty of different social groups here...

To be honest, as informative as this thread is for me to read ☺.... I'm a bit puzzled as to what the central topic is, and what the point of it is? When you say:
I decided to keep you in touch about situation in my country
what exactly do mean by "in touch"?

Are you referring to the war effort? Or - about life in general there during the conflict? Or both? Or - are you here (on this thread) to give an exclusively Russian perspective on things - as a sort of "counter" to the Western opinions and observations that dominate the news coverage of things?

fair point I guess. We're also 83+ Million people here in germany, with quite some cultural differences depending on the region we live in. But may be you can tell me a bit of your own perspective, and your social environment.

It depends on certain Russian, but because of propaganda "western values" seems like something wrong. And it needs to be reminded that many Russians are sexists and homophobes so ideas that women must have the same rights as men and homosexual relationships are OK are something bad for these people
That's quite ironic conciddering how many famous russian people had been queer. Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanow was gay just like Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski, Nikolai Gogol, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Nikolai Klyuev and many more notable russian poets and writers.

A possibly stupid question, but exactly why is sugar so important in Russia? I get to read about sugar disappearing from stores there and people fighting about it. What is it used so much for? As someone who lives without using almost any sugar, I honestly don't know.

Also how is the general situation with shopping?

Kings used to declare wars over cinnamon and spices so I understand why someone would fight to the death for sugar : P

Canning fruits and berries (there is a minimum of 10-15 kg of sugar needed for harvesting for the winter)
Well, I think so, I don't buy sugar

Maybe a "bridge" between Russia and Europe? Like what is happening to us (and you can tell what is happening to you) Actually, now I don't know either :(

There are several layers of the problem:

* On lowest layer - a lot of elderly peoples remembered the deficit of 1980s and economical collapse of 1990s, and rushed to stores to "be prepared" (and it quickly get out of rational, with some old ladies stockpiling up to HUNDRED kilos of sugar).

* On mid-layer- a lot of small store owners decided that it's a good time for some nice little money-making, and started to buy sugar from supermarkets to re-sell for higher price.

* On higher layer - many sugar suppliers and large stores hold their supplies, waiting till prices would go up, so they would be able to sell sugar for even higher price.

All together, those three layers literally created sugar deficit without any actual reason for it. Unfortunately, it's not the first time. When pandemic just started in 2020, and first quarantine measures were implemented, peoples panicked and started to buy a lot of products in enormous quantities. The suppliers weren't prepared for such absurd demands, so prices soared - which caused peoples to became even more desperate to get products such a toilet paper or salt or lemons, before they became more expensive.

It's quite the same situation here. In Russia they hoard Buckwheat and Sugger, in France they hoard whine and in Germany they hoard toilet paper and canola oil.

If ya'll want to discuss this topic, try to do so from a modicum of reality. Otherwise, the tired whataboutism of "but the US ..." and giving Russia's military a soft pass on doing things like executing tied up civilians can be done off Fur Affinity.
