A possibly stupid question, but exactly why is sugar so important in Russia? I get to read about sugar disappearing from stores there and people fighting about it. What is it used so much for? As someone who lives without using almost any sugar, I honestly don't know.
There are several layers of the problem:
* On lowest layer - a lot of elderly peoples remembered the deficit of 1980s and economical collapse of 1990s, and rushed to stores to "be prepared" (and it quickly get out of rational, with some old ladies stockpiling up to HUNDRED kilos of sugar).
* On mid-layer- a lot of small store owners decided that it's a good time for some nice little money-making, and started to buy sugar from supermarkets to re-sell for higher price.
* On higher layer - many sugar suppliers and large stores hold their supplies, waiting till prices would go up, so they would be able to sell sugar for even higher price.
All together, those three layers literally created sugar deficit without any actual reason for it. Unfortunately, it's not the first time. When pandemic just started in 2020, and first quarantine measures were implemented, peoples panicked and started to buy a lot of products in enormous quantities. The suppliers weren't prepared for such absurd demands, so prices soared - which caused peoples to became even more desperate to get products such a toilet paper or salt or lemons, before they became more expensive.
