Do you feel related to your fursona? How? Why?

I'm a therian, so my Sona started out as a way to visualize who I really am. As I began making him, however, he quickly just became a mirror reflection of the ideal me instead of the real me. So, in the end, my fursona became like an end goal. Someone for me to strive to be exactly like (I don't think any of that made any sense outside of my head....)

Sassy lesser panda.
I chose a red panda because I have similar characteristics/habbits as one. ( Don't like hot weather, nocturnal, stocky, curious, usually easy going )
If I choose on my favorite animal then i'd be a cheetah but... that just doesn't fit me. xD

I think for many people (Me included), their fursona is just them as an animal. Their backstory, their life, is the same as theirs, because that is what they did. While some use it as escapism, many do it just as a way to represent themselves. I chose a hawk because that is what I saw myself as if I was an animal. The only change that I made was to the name (Blitz, instead of my real name). There are a large amount of people who add a large amount of backstory and abilities that they would never have, creating 'sonas with very different personalities than what they have IRL. These are the kind of people who have a lot more escapism with theirs, and actually have a lot less in common with their sonas than most people, as they create them as who they want to be, not who they are.

I used to be in your same boat, OP. Went through so many sonas and designs in the span of 6 years, nothing stuck. I tried making my sona what I wanted to be, then just what I liked. No dice. Finally came to me one day; I decided to personify my issues and anxieties rather than make her my ideal image. So she's like an amplified mash up of my problems.
Like she's scared of everyone, she's squatty and fat to reflect my self-image, wears a scarf so she can easily hide, and she's extremely anxious and skittish all the time. I still kept elements I like though, such as rabbit and gecko features. So who knows, maybe look at it from other angles and see if it comes to you. c:

I do because my 'sona chose me. I never could draw it but I wrote down a big description of it. Mine represents space exploration and becoming free not bound to any planet.

Since I was a youngin' I always had a fascination with cartoon animals and growing up that never changed.

2016 was the year I came to the realization that I shared similar interests to those of the fandom, and 2017 was the year everything changed for me.

Some time ago I was asleep and had various dreams that I could recall and remember, which is where my Fursona came into play. I wrote more about the Origin of My Fursona on this forum a while back (You can search for it if interested).

I often thought I might be a Therian but i'm not entirely certain if I am, though it is plausible (=.

EDIT: Going back to the original post, I noticed I missed the point of this thread entirely, sorry about that.

Mine does have similar traits as I do with the exception of being not bound to a planet and able to traverse time and space lol. But that is just because it is something I believe is possible to do from a non-physical stand point all individuals are able to achieve and unlock with meditation.

But not everyone believes this (which is fine and everyone has a path they must follow), but it is something that helps keep me one with the natural surroundings. (Yes I am weird but it is who I am) xD

Controversial beliefs aside, my Fursona, I believe, is an extension of me. I hope I stayed on topic. (=

I connect because he is literally me...but better. I guess what you'd call my "fursona" is exactly like me, but has things in his life that I never got in mine, such as friends and relationships.
Characterizing my character is basically telling you about myself...which is pretty boring.

Yes. He's basically me with fur and feathers. Now if only I would settle on a color scheme.

Mine is currently in design, but she is me but allowed to be more transparent. Anything that I feel afraid to show irl as myself, I can allow to come through in her. I can let my vulnerabilities show through her personality as they are just part of character. At least that how she's felt when I've thought her through. Also- she's a dragon fox hybrid which is just an animal combo I always wished existed (I used to try and draw them as a kid).

Gaitsu is the epitome of how I WANT others to view me. Calm, cool, and collected, while also being in better standings than I am myself, have more freedoms to do the things I wish I could be doing.

While he IS my fursona, and that won't change, I've recently made a new OC to use who is literally my self insert. I had to do a lot of asking around to get a general consensus from my friends about what animal best described me (They pretty much all said I have a bad temper, so Dragon fit best), so now I have that to show people how I personally would react.

My dude has a lot of aesthetic I like, but I also give it meaning, because I'm a deep motherfucker that thinks too much into this shit. I also have the same or similar personality

*He's a wolf because: I am a lover of canids, and I grew up adoring wolves. On a more personal level, I imitate canid behavior and feel close and connected to them. I have had dogs all my life so I know the emotional communication of a growl, whimper, bite, etc. Many times I would consider myself like or as a canine, the stereotype with wolves is "the lone wolf" which I tend to be, however, if and when I do form a pack I do attract fiercely and that's where my loyalty lies

*He's part avian/has wings because: When I was younger I had a lot of flying dreams, most of which I was floating or jumping across buildings. Towards my mid-adolescent years I read a book series called "The maximum ride series" about avian-human hybrids. That resonated with me a lot and I loved the science fiction aspect to that story. I have had wing-flying dreams since. What officially made me decide to put wings on a dog though was I saw a lot of high quality winged canid art, which I adored the fantastical element of! Most of those stemmed from DA so when I joined DA it was the second thing I did to his design

*His species is: I chose more specific species later. He is a "Florida Black wolf", simply because that's where I was from, and he is a black wolf. But avianwise, I chose the griffon vulture from the Himalayas. I thought this was the PERFECT representation of his "angelic" side (see below). The lore behind Griffin vultures is because in Tibet, their burial rituals do not involve cremation or ground burial. Instead, they take the bodies and feed them to the vultures. They call these vultures "dankinis" meaning sky angels, and they carry the souls of the dead to the heavens. Naturally, these supernatural figures are just vultures, at the end of the day.

*His color scheme because: I actually like dark colors, it's soothing and relaxing. Black is a nice color paired with anything, really. Usually, I hate the color pink, but with the proper shade of pink (I think it can be called magenta/hot pink/maroon) paired with the color black I always thought the color combo was pretty awesome. I'm actually a slightly feminine male by nature so I think it works personalitywise for me, and I can make the pink aesthetic work masculinely or femininely because that's just how I am, haha!

*My fursona's name is Vance Nyx because: I was pretty uncreative as fuck actually, so for his name I chose a derivative of my username:Wolf and Night. Both for the same reasons as above (Because of my attraction to wolves and the soothingness of dark). I looked up in old Norse language, the word for wolf was "Varg", and the word for night was something similar to "Nott". Originally, I combined them as Vannott but I eventually decided that sounded like a shitty name. So I took those and made a real name: Vance Nyx, I sometimes nicknamed them "Van". I liked that their first name was also a derivitive of my own, mine starts with a V as well, so my fursona isn't as boring to share my name, but has close connection to it.

*By trade he is: A nomad or wanderer. He travels the land with no goal in mind but to search for new things and go on adventures, having wings is also very good for travel. This one's pretty ironic, I'm no traveler myself, and I don't wish to be because I find first world tourism which costs thousands of dollars and governmental regulations on travel to be a boring substitute to what Vance can do. At most, I've pandered to the idea of being "homeless", just a few personal belongings, maybe a job or easy income, and just taking to living out in the world and traveling by foot. This is just a passing fancy though and I attribute all the worldwide adventure streak to my fursona. In reality, my fursonas adventurous streak to me is more metaphorical, I'm curious by nature and seek to stretch new boundaries, see more nature, and discover new things.

*Personalitywise he is: like myself. I stray from most people , especially strangers I am intimidated by. I usually take a lot of time to wander or do things on my own, or hike out in nature of my own accord. He often marvels and is in emotional awe of nature and has a constant content demeanor like I do. Despite being passive, he does have a defensive streak and is wary of danger. On occassion, if he does make a friend, he's friendly and affectionate. His hobbies are similar to my own, he's a cartographer or journal writer, and as explorers do, they write or sketch in new places they have been. Vance isn't a professional though, and just does it for his own personal interest, mainly. He's good at swordfighting/handling a blade though, which I am not though I do have an interest in swordsmanship. I attribute this to he has more need for self defense than I do.

He isn't a supernatural character but avian because: I don't much like supernatural/powered characters. He doesn't have any special powers unless you count natural flight as part of an OP thing for a wolf to have. I thought it was ironic because even though he has white wings, he is not an angel at all, merely a simple hybrid. This is a callback reference to the maximum ride series, because they weren't supernatural beings but on an occassional whim could be mistaken for them, but in the end they were just kids. Related to me, I have always strived to be the purest, best person I can, I've always been "the good kid" at home and school, never intentionally have done anything wrong. Thing is, I'm not an angel, I'm just as broken and flawed as anyone, and even though I do my best, there's things I still am bad at, that I need to learn to do better. I'm not an angel, simply a human. You can throw in some religious connotation for that too because I grew up in that environment.

Yeeeeahh...I put a LOT of thought into this, some of it came up later and I added the lore to it. Most of it ended up tying back together, incidentally.

Ironically, even though he is me, I also consider him his own separate entity. He both is and isn't me!

Kili, my fursona is basically me, but he is distinct enough that he can be his own character. He is basically a mix of who I want to be both physically and personality wise (mostly personality) whilst taking note, if slightly mixing up, my/his faults. It's the same thing to a lesser extent with my secondary fursona of Vail.

When it came to making a sona, I chose a wolf since that was the animal I could most relate to.

Initally, I just had a plain brown furred wolf as my sona, who's appearence was based of a character that plays a major role in a fiction I'm working on. The character is solid but the sona was a blank slate to represent me.

But eventully, with a little help from SL, I was able to start developing an actual sona and character. I like the color black, so my sona became a black furred wolf (albeit one that looks like a fox). Then I started using blue as another major color, starting off with blue clothing and hair before, eventully, I got the idea of glowing tattoos from seeing someone using a similar set for a character of their own. Upon trying out the glowing blue tattoos, I got the idea of a 'nanowarrior' and since then, Kili has became both my sona and an original character with a personaility that is very similar but distinct from my own as I began to devolop the character further.

Vail is very similar, only red is a more predominant theme.

And to top it off, well, the advantage of being wolves that look like foxes is that I can call them wolves, folves or foxes with no issues.

I designed my fursona to be partially with my personality, but also mostly what an ideal partner/friend would be like for me. My reasoning for that is that I have nothing in common with the people around me, and I don't feel like I belong. If it sounds weird... it's because I am weird.

When I first started thinking about him he was a different species. In his first version he was a deer, in the second a bunny, but ultimately I felt no connection to those animals. The final animal I chose is a monkey because I realized how much I love them last year after I went to the zoo and saw capuchins playing around. It was like a moment of clarity... it just clicked and I was like "Oh... I get it now."

Anyway, I pretty much have his background story in my mind and am working on writing it down. Although it's turning out to be quite more annoying that I anticipated. Primarily because English is not my native language.

I think it's pretty common to project who you are or who you want to be into a sona. After all, it is your creation and most likely says something about who you are. However, it's not a total tell tale like I like to divert people's expectations. For instance being a shark you'd think they'd be over confident and out going I like to be clam, reserved, and a little shy much like myself. You can also just like the design of them in general like I do too.

Oh this is perfect!
I've always been Dathamier, and Dathamier has always been me. So my anthro-ish fursona is something I view more as myself than anything else. I guess you could rope me in with them dank memes: on all levels but physical I am a dragon.
I don't know exactly how often that overlap occurs in the fandom. Though I'm going to venture a guess it's fairly common at least compared to general society

My fursona is 100% a fictional character based somewhat on me. He is NOT me but he represents a wish fulfillment of how I’d like my life to go. I know I’m too old to live long enough to see the technology of Telnac’s day irl, so Telnac is like an alternate version of me, if I had been born late enough in humanity’s time line that mind/computer upload became legal, affordable and commonplace in my lifetime.

Hi Belatucadros, I'm joining in late on this but I hope the comments were helpful to you. To me this is an example of the "best" of the Forum and was a pleasure to read.

Oh and one more thing...
I’m too old to live long enough to see the technology of Telnac’s day
I not so sure about that, Telnac. The first android was just granted citizenship. If you're still around in 10 years, it might be possible!

I think the citizenship thing was a publicity stunt. We’re still decades away from artificial general intelligence that can rival our own. Brain downloads requires significant advancement in both biomedical science and AI. I figure I have at most 50 years left to live (and far fewer if my doctor is be believed.) We may have experimental mind-machine downloading of some parts of the human brsin by then but the whole thing?! Unlikely.

No. I like dragons because I think they’re powerful, magestic creatures not because they’re large. I find smaller dragons far more appealing than enormous ones.
