Ever been afraid of sleeping?

I don't know why, but lately I just feel anxious before I go to sleep, worried. Some of the dreams I've been having haven't been scary, but are very realistic. I have no control over what happens to me, so its not a lucid dream. They just border on my actual life so much that I'm afraid one day I won't know if I'm dreaming or if I'm awake.

I've even had dreams before that involve waking up from the sleep I'm in and when I actually wake up, it really fucks with my head. Its been a long time since I've had that kind of dream, but I keep fearing I might have it again

And then there's the fear that I'll die in my sleep for some unknown reason, like I'll be killed by something. Would I continue to dream if I was dead and not even know I died? I know, it sounds silly, but I think about this stuff sometimes and it really freaks me out.

Well, whether you are dreaming or conscious, do your best. Then you disappoint neither your conscious self or somnolescent self.

You have no idea....

When I was ill, I would be terrified of sleeping because I knew that people would come out of the shadows and watch me. I also was afraid that I would wake up in another body. And the act of falling asleep itself makes me anxious, because everything sort of just switches then. You start feeling weightless and everything starts morphing and then you fall and that's it. And whether you fall into a good or bad dream is up to chance.

I used to like sleeping, but nowadays it just reminds me of creepy things. I already think I don't sleep alone sometimes. I try not to think about it which sort of works.

I've had bad dreams all my life. I die constantly in them. It never gets easier? Some advice I've been given is write down everything that happens int he dream, explore it, give it some agency and some space to breathe.

Try and pick up lucid dreaming. Not all of it, but perhaps just reality checks. That should keep you grounded in whether you are dreaming or not, if you're worried.

Drink some tea or a warm happy drink before you go to bed. Read a book that comforts you. Listen to soft music. Try anything and maybe something will stick!

Yeah I had a period where I thought there were things waiting for me to go to sleep and right as I fell asleep they'd grab me. With the dreaming part I've figured out what is dream and what is not through practicing dreaming... what I mean by that is if I wake up after a dream, I try to fall asleep again right away while thinking a out the dream; from there I go into a daydream like dreaming state where I can't control what I dream, but I am conscious that I am dreaming and I can now differentiate between the two. The only time I don't know when I'm dreaming is when I pass out.

Edit: also op, the odds of you dying in your sleep randomly are very very slim especially without any medical issues.

You make a good point, but if I were to die in my sleep, I'd rather it be something that doesn't wake me up in my final moments. What really freaks me out is the thought of someone trying to kill me and right as they're about to shoot or give a killing blow, I wake up just in time to see it, but enough time to scream.

I really do wish I could record my dreams but the problem is, I barely remember. I only get like screenshots or gifs of them when I try to remember lol. It makes it very frustrating cause there are almost just enough bits and pieces that I remember to put together something coherent of what I dreamed about, but it ends up making no sense.

I don't get it. I used to be so good at remembering my dreams. Now they're such a jumbled mess, I can't remember any of them.

Lucid dreaming is something I've been interested in, but again, its that fear of becoming so addicted to controlling the dream you're in, that you don't ever wake up. Like even when you are awake, you feel in a dream like state

Dying in your sleep is a dream to most... that's the point you won't know.

Dream recall gets better the more you practice it! It's the freshest the first 15 minutes you're up. Keep a notepad by your bed. Write everything you can think of as soon as you wake up. Even over a month, you'll see improvement!

As for lucid dreaming, it takes amazing discipline to learn how to control your dreams. Reality checks only let you know WHEN you are in a dream, but knowing you are in a dream does not mean you can control it. Here's an article I pulled from google if you need clarification: http://www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com/reality-checks.html

What DOES my username mean...?
i'm only ever fearful of sleep when i'm sick. i'm prone to mind-fucking fever dreams when i don't feel well and having a stuffy nose worsens my sleep apnea so i have lots of uncomfortable drowning/suffocation nightmares. i don't have pleasant dreams anymore; at least none that i remember. At least once a week i wake up with the urge to scream but it hasn't stopped me from sleeping all together.

The other night I had this dream where I pulled out all of my teeth. They'd break and become jagged and cut my hand as I pull the pieces out. But it's not that I don't like to sleep, or am afraid to because of these dreams, I just don't seem to want to most night. I'd honestly rather surf the internet and listen to music.

omg I can relate to that, I used to experience things like that for a while but haven't dealt with anything like that in a while. Nowadays I take cannabis oil capsules every now and then before bed and sleep like a baby. There's plenty of other things that can help as well, hope you get it all sorted out. Sometimes things like that just need time to pass.

I used to, but now my dream catcher steals all my dreams. Haven't had one, or at least one that I can remember in years.

Cannabis oil capsules? What are those?

Basically I make an extract from either flowers or trim and dissolve it into coconut oil and put it into gel-caps. They work really well for anxiety, insomnia, pain etc..

Not sure where you live but if theres medical in your state you should try it, could help you out :)

Once I drank a little before going to sleep. When I lay in bed, I, don't know how, accidentally switch breath into "manual mode".

A few hours I couldn't close my eyes because was afraid that I will stop breathing in a dream... God, i need help.
