Manual for cars.
Manual for scooters.
Manual for motorcycles (Yes, automatic bikes exist).

It gives you a greater feeling of control, has slightly better fuel economy, makes engine braking a whole lot easier...

Learned with four on the floor...

I can't decide, cause I want to learn stick, since its better overall, but automatic is easier to learn.

TIL a lot of regulars drive stick.

I stick to automatic. I haven't had much occasion to learn stick and I love my golf so theres little reason to learn for years yet

What's the transmission of the Chevrolet Camaro?

Take your pick, you can have either one.

I'm about to acquire a 1997 Chevy s10 with a five speed.

I've only ever driven automatic transmissions. Everyone keeps telling me that I'm fucked.

Thoughts, FAF?

Practice, practice, practice...

In the UK manuals are much more common. It's rare to find automatics. I love driving manual. However, when I eventually get a car I would like an automatic because the insurance is cheaper. Only reason.

That's odd... In America/California, transmission has no effect on insurance rates, far as I know. It's more a matter of how old you are, and the value of your car/truck (or perhaps just the number of cylinders in your engine). When I first started driving, it cost me $150 a month (and that was almost thirty years ago). Now, I'm paying fifty and change (just made some changes that dropped my monthly bill twelve bucks).

Nowadays, it's getting so the autos either match or exceed manuals in mpgs. As for engine braking, I have no problem doing that in my auto four-speed... I just drop out of overdrive into third, and coast down hills without the need for brakes, not to mention using that trick when coming up on a stop. Works perfectly fine.

can't even drive a goddamn stick without shredding the clutch, fuck that. Automatic. Less fussing with doohickeys, more paying attention to the road.

Even having said that, you must acknowledge that automatics give you less to do. Yeah, nine hours driving a stick might be more work; but it's a welcome sort of work; versus just keeping your foot on the pedal and trying to entertain yourself with passing trees.

(Though to be fair, a lot of interstate traffic is just putting it in 5th and cruising, from what I'm told.)

HI GUYYYYYYYYYYYS
Once you go stick and master it, you don't go back. My baby is a stick and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I mean I understand some of the people who are learning it have reason to flip out. I was pretty scared shitless the first couple times I was on a hill, but once you get the hang of it, its so much more comfortable, and fun. Plus it teaches you to STAY THE HELL OFF YOUR CELL PHONE, since noone would be brainless enough to attempt to drive stick while on a phone.

Takin it slow.
Auto. So I can hold my drink/sandwich/cock/coffee in my other hand.

Priorities people. :v

Nope. Getting the hang of driving a stick is easier than you'd think, and after a while it sort of becomes second nature.

I literally learned in about two hours. 30 minutes of practicing starting from stops in a parking lot (hardest part) along with parking and backing up, an hour of driving local, and 30 minutes on the highway.

It really just takes a little patience, which those naysayers you've met obviously lack. Take it slow. Yes, at first, you WILL STALL more times than you would like to admit. Yes, impatient jerks will honk at you and you will be embarrassed as hell. Which will only lead to more goof-ups and stalling. But that's all part of the learning process. If you've ever heard that somebody's only stalled three times in their entire life or some shit that person is a fucking liar.

I PICK MY GEARS BECAUSE IM SO COOL... zzz

Automatics will always slam you on the quarter unless you're right on top of your shit. They're generally lazy shifting, but they'll come out of the gates like a crazy mofo and they're smart enough to shift around peak output, besides, decent ones are snappy as fuck between gears.

There's benefits with manuals, but driving from point A to B, it's annoying as fuck to gloat over the collective hours you took to understand how to come off a fucking clutch...

There seems to be this general sentiment that expressing you like doing something that some others haven't learned how to do automatically equates to gloating, and it's really weird. Why are you so angry

What about starting on a hill? That's always fun.

My dad trolled me with that. I wasn't able to work on hills for a period of time after that one.

What the hell is a semi automatic?

Also, I learned with manual but who the hell cares about shifting gears and shit. Automic is just more convenient.

I think a "semi" automatic is one of those that is basically an automatic but you can put it in a "manual mode" where you can opt to do the shifting yourself. Not actual stick shift shifting, more like shift-up shift-down pseudo-F1 shit.

Everything works if you let it
For pleasure driving, I prefer a manual. It feels good to be in control of everything. I've been thinking of getting a little 2-seater, like an MGB to restore.
For my daily driver / commuting in traffic, I have an automatic. Just less hassle.
Yes, motorcycles with automatic gearboxes exist, I've worked on one once (Moto Guzzi V1000 Convert). No thanks, I'll keep my 4 speed.

Semi-automatic is probably most likened to having Siri trying to pick up chicks for you, well, driving a ferrari with one of these paddle shifter thingies would be fun REGARDLESS of being semi-auto.

And for the record, I drive manual. Both parents do and I had to learn. It's easier than you think!

I drive a stick right now, but I'd rather have an auto. It's not hard anymore, and I get by just fine with stick; but I'd prefer to have a free hand if I need it.

Now, what I really need is power steering.
Damn potholes. >.>

Husky love.
Well my daily driver, a 1967 volkswagen beetle is Obviously a stick. As is the 66 VW beetle we have

Our 1961 thunderbird is an automatic. The beetle feels right to be driving a stick. If the thunderbird was a stick I would think "what idiot would make this a stick??" Its a completely different kind of ride. Smooth luxury power, not supposed to be a stick.

Thats how I feel. SUVs and trucks, Automatics feel right.

A mustang? MG? GTI? 1949 ford sedan? Stick all the way.
