Family Guy is 30 minutes of unfunny, punctuated by moments of hilarity.

I like to think that McFarlane is just half-assing it with the last few seasons as payback on Fox for being cancelled twice. The ratings would STILL be pretty high even if the whole show was just one 20-something minute shot of a jar of mayo, considering that the fans seem to put up with just about anything from it at this point.

That being said, the first three seasons (i.e. the pre-revival episodes) are still pretty damn funny.

Recently Family Guy has become unfunny at best, and at its worst it's a headache to watch, what with its deluge of pop-culture references and poor overall jokes that range from bad to just cringeworthy.
