Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

I know at this point it is a few months old, but I thought I would make a serious topic on it since the one I found was like "lulz and stuff, PRETTY GIRLS".

I admit that the beginning of the game is kind of rushed and throws you right into the other world right away, much unlike the original one which introduced you to characters and let you get to know what they are like before the game play actually starts, bit it is easily shrugged off by most players who just want to play the game.

I know a fair bit about FFTA2 since I have over 150 hours total in my two files, one of them being barely started and the other basically completed. Fights do take a long time since it is a turn based RPG where you have 6 people on each side at most times depending on the mission, I believe they can take from 15 to 20 minutes at times to finish.
The system is great though, it makes you think about what you will do next to create a strategy so that you don't get killed. Not to mention it gives you the option of expansive numbers of classes depending on the race to make strong combos to combat your opponents with.

My particular favorite one for healing is to have everyone wearing reaper cloaks and bone plate so that they absorb dark damage, then have a Scholar Nu-Mou use a certain skill (I'd have to go look it up) that does dark damage to EVERYONE, which means that everyone in my party is healed and anyone who can't absorb dark on the enemy side gets damaged.

Anyways...the weapon gaining system is somewhat annoying, but at least in this version you can't end up throwing one item away and not being able to complete every mission, that happened if you threw away a rat tail in the original one, which annoyed me back when I had that version.

It generally takes about 30 hours to get to the final boss and beat him efficiently on Normal difficulty, which isn't too bad, then you have all the game play afterward with all the extra missions you can get.

The game also actually requires you to think ahead about what classes your going to be since they all have their own special builds and give your characters certain strengths and weaknesses. So if you make a weakly built character, then you will be stuck with it. I built up a Bangaa that I made a gladiator, Dragoon and Master Monk through 83 of his levels, then I turned him into a Cannoneer...he can do 700 damage with Mortar if he is hitting someone from the back..with a ranged attack, isn't that just awesome and totally worth the effort?

I do admit that much of the storyline feels thrown together at times, and the ending could of used a bit more work, since it was all like "see you later" and stuff...though the twist from when you get back is kind of neat.

Anyways, If I were to rate the game, I'd give it a 9/10.
I particularly liked it, not to mention it is time consuming, which is something I rather like to see in a game, and it is overall fun!

If any of you have played this game, let me know of your opinions and such, I want to know what you guys think.

What I've realized in the five hours I've played the game is that Adelle is probably one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen in a game. The storyline was noticeably worse than TA. At least in the original you technically were the villain.

I got bored of it. Having spent probably 300+ hours on Final Fantasy Tactics for the Playstation with tons of classes, secret characters and items, and side quests, Advance 2 bored me a bit. I went out and got Disgaea DS and I don't know how I could ever go back to moving one character at a time.

I was never good at Tactics... which saddens me. It's the only one in the subseries with a "serious" plot.

I'm afraid I'm lost for every tactical rpg. Blame Tactics Ogre (PSX) for being so absolutely and utterly awesome! I don't think I'll ever find a better one :)

never played the second tactics but i have beaten the one for ps1 and the advance one :O fun for awhile but get repetitive and slow :[

I was really excited for A2 and went ahead and reserved a copy. It's not a bad game per se, but it did get redundant after a while. I need to at least try to take down the Four Kings in that collective battle, but other than that, I've pretty much exhausted the game of missions. Usually when I've played through an RPG like this, that means going back to pimp out my characters as much as possible, but...meh. Not feeling it for some reason.

I was surprised at how the storyline actually managed to be lamer than the one for the GBA. Kind of makes me wish they'd at least try to do the next handheld Tactics in the vein of the first one, but I doubt that will ever happen, what with the need to attract a more 'kiddie' audience. Oh well.

A2 is kinda like brawl in the sense that it is more or less a mediocre game with new extras pasted on the sides for the people who have been keeping up with the franchise, but all in all it is addicting to play.

Thank you. The *spoilers* heritor class barely makes up for her extremely irritating characters. It's as if the character developers on this project decided to use a check list on the most annoying female character design in an RPG

Make her a thief
Give her the most cunt attitude with an "I'm too special" backstory
Not change her personality throughout the entire game
Make her look a malnourished anorexic

Ok I woulda considered playing A2 but if it has laws... fuck that.

They have laws, but the system is A LOT better then the original.

Sometimes the laws can be stupid, but you get advantages and items this time around for following them.

Such as moving +2, Power +5, Bonus AP 3 (gives you 90AP per mission, VERY useful, especially with duel wield)

This might be a shocker but the law system is actually forgiving!
It's not like TA where the enemies will keep getting yellow cards for repeatedly disobeying the laws, then you get a red card your first offense.

Missed a few.

-Make her some kind of chosen one
-Make her get kidnapped
-Make her get mind-controlled at one point during the story.
-Make her fall in love with Luso

I actually enjoyed some of the game, but honestly the story wasn't that good at all...I mean as interesting as it was to see that organization Rapha and Marach mention in Tactics in work, you only really see Ilua. I personally think Ilua could have been waaaaay more of a villain, she seems mostly like a secondary villain.

But honestly I liked how it did the missions, you had some variety, as opposed to Crisis core which is all "Kill this. You win! *victory theme*", but I really wish the had been some more substories for Clan PissBagel to get involved in. And yes, I actually named my clan "PissBagel:, because honestly I felt like the default name, "Gully", was really stupid and I couldn't think of anything better. (thank god it wasn't as bad as "Nutsy") So I naturally just hit the first thing that came into my mind, which was...PissBagel.

The reason I allotted the kidnapped and the mind control is because I was trying my hardest not to put in spoilers, out of fear of a "that was a spoiler" response.

In the case of "chosen one," that's what I meant when I said "I'm too special" backstory. Since we're no longer on the issue of spoilers I'll also add the quests that are focused on her have that undercurrent, "friendship, togetherness," and everything else that is total moral vomit of being very special which actually made me hate her even more.

Making her one of the most broken character didn't help either...

In the case of Illua, which again is a spoiler, I would say that her lack of personality was compensated because, one she was trying to take over the world/destroy it, and 2 she was the one of the leaders of an entire crime syndicate.

This might be a shocker but the law system is actually forgiving!

I am glad that out of all of the things that got nerffed in this game, it was also that damn law system. I love how you can completely ignore it when you have quests that give you stupid laws like, no buffs or debuffs in a room full of Cassies.

All I have to say I it made me adore Bangaa more than I used to when I paired the gladiator's magic-skills with the trickster's obscene speed, range, and magic.

(8-range, high-speed, every-turn ultima-blade doing 600+ damage, whut?)

Not to mention that I don't understand the complaints of a "nerffed" assassin. Spell blade-Ultima Masher-Longbow-Blood Price-Regen combo dealing max damage still seems pretty broken to me.

Considering that in order to GET to that level of overpowered-ness takes a lot more effort than it was to make an assassin overpowered in the original tactics advance...I'd sday that's a nerf.

I mean in Tactics Advance, I would sometimes have up to 90% chance to hit with that one ability that would cause instant-death and that's not that hard/time consuming to get as opposed to the ultima-stuff.

But oh believe me..I liked the laws far better here. And there actually was somewhat of a story behind it other than "OH mewt is the Prince heehee". I never really found the laws to be as annoying this time around.

But honestly Whitehowl, I think it actually would have been nice to see a little more of the Crime Syndicate, but then again though if they are actually having them be the "Antagonist" of the Ivalice setting, I'd actually be down with that. I give them bonus points for not actually defeating ALL of the syndicate, just Kuja's long-lost-half-sister. Heck that could be a good sub-story or main-story if the successor to Final Fantasy XI is an Ivalice game.
