Important: Forum Closure, FA Discord Coming Soon

After roughly 17 years we have made the decision to close the forums. As technology and the internet changes we need to re-evaluate our positions every so often, adapt, and shed our shells like the majestic Alaskan king crab. We appreciate the time, input, and energy members of FAF have given to both the forums and FA as a whole. Closing a community is never an easy decision but fret not! While we are closing one door, a new one is opening in its place.

Stepping in to fill the void will be the all new, all shiny, Fur Affinity Discord!

FAF has a long history with FA, and it was a project that we started back in 2005 to help bring the site and community together. Over time, the forums have fallen to the backburner as platforms such as Telegram and Discord filled the role forums once held.

The forums will go read-only effective January 1, 2023.

We hope to see you in our new community and look forward to chatting with everyone soon!

The unfortunate reality is forum usage as a whole has been declining on the internet for a number of years, mostly killed of due to social media, Discord, Reddit, and other platforms which are kind of all encompassing. Ads aren't always the important thing, but the forum doesn't raise enough money to cover the costs of annual licenses, plug-ins, hosting, etc. Traditional forums have been in gradual decline over the past few years.

I understand this will be frustrating to many. FAF is a community, and making the decision to close a community, however small, is not a decision we make lightly.

You gotta do, what you gotta do. This isn't going to effect FA though, right?

It will not impact FA, no.

Forum maintenance, licensing costs, and general server upkeep pull resources from the main site. Part of our goals for FA 2023 is to continue making improvements, refinements, and to focus on the main site. While the forums may be a small, several hours of tech time dedicated to the forums a month could be working to implement new features on the main site, and we had to make a call.

We tried to keep many of the Discord features somewhat in parity with the forums. We understand this won't be a 1:1 replacement but we didn't want to close one door without opening another, so we tried to come to a good compromise.

I've registered to the forums only recently, and I only just made my first forum post. I got an overwhelming amount of response, so I don't know where this completely fabricated notion of forum "decline" came from. Forums are far more organised and well suited for processes like commissioning than a noisy discord server. Oh,and you said "most places" don't use forums, but I don't think we should be trying to be like "most places." That's why we're here in the first place.

breaking this place will almost ensure i won't ever but fa+, when i really was considering it because unlike other places online, fa has maintained its old feel pretty well

if you lose this, the decline will be sealed in, fa discord will be no different then other peoples discord servers, it won't attract the type of people who cannot handle rapid posts, or don't want discords setup, on top of that some users here are unable to use discord

you will lose what sets faf apart
