I don't think I am going to be on the discord, but I don't think that will be a problem for anybody.

I decided I was going to avoid fraternising with the staff because back in 2017-2018 when the forum was swamped by alt-right posting, I didn't want to validate any accusations that content I challenged was being removed because I had any kind of privileged relationship with staff members.

I will back you up. Anecdotal mention is anecdotal, but once I was performing site migration for a Serious Organization(tm). And I was explicitly ordered not to pull the plug on the old site until the new one is up & running as it should. In fact the archived, read-only version of old one got attached there permanently, because of some external requirements. But, to each their own.

i'd argue that sarcasm is something you can detect in text. the question i asked was pretty hyperbolic in nature. context clues are also relevant.
anyway, i actually did want to know more about what ranks in the server would actually do, unless it's just a MEE6 thing and it's all for leaderboard cool guy points

that shouuulddd be fine? it just kind of worries me that people may start using the general channels to grind levels, thus filling them with hollow messages. it's already hard enough to use general channels in huge servers, and that would just make it worse if that's what ends up happening. i'm glad it's not as fleshed out rank-wise, though. here's to hoping a social hierarchy doesn't form out of the levels, lol.

I haven't used FAF in probably about two years now (I had to make a new account cause I couldn't find the email or password to my old one), but switching to Discord will make it more accessible for me and probably many others. Being able to see responses in real-time will eliminate the phenomenon of getting "ninja'd" and voice chats will be pretty cool too, although I'm not sure if they would get utilized much. It will also take a huge load off the mod team with automatic verification and spam protection and all that good stuff.

My only suggestion is that could forums on the new server have a 10s slowmode by default? That would help make the server feel more slow-paced like the forums and encourage higher-effort responses. Also it would eliminate point grinding as mentioned earlier.

Also, I saw earlier that someone had Discord blocked on their home network. Have you tried going to https://ptb.discord.com or https://canary.discord.com? In rare cases this can be used to bypass restrictions, but I have only seen it work once. Worse case you can use it on your phone in the browser on mobile data.

Yep. Titles are just a good way to judge if a user is kind of a "known quantity." Just a regular user, y'know? And it's kind of a feel good for users to get a lil' level up, but it doesn't do anything, convey benefits, etc. It's account parsley.

I'd normally play Devil's Advocate, but many points made in this thread are correct. A large Discord server may repel some of the site's userbase. I would anticipate that activity on Discord will be plentiful, but the community of FA will shrink significantly as a result. New members may come and go. Maybe not.

Message boards aren't necessarily "outdated." People still use them despite advancements in online social interactions. Ironically, I use Discord more than these boards anyway. But I still post on message boards that don't necessarily pertain to the furry community.

Not that it really matters that much to me, I guess. This place did provide some entertainment for a while during quarantine while I watched from a corner, and I even made some of the best friends along the way (some of whom roleplayed for quite some time on this very board; I talk to them almost every day now through other means). Some of the ones I wanted to keep around don't have a Discord and don't even post here anymore. But I made some friends I wouldn't have met otherwise.
