Fur Name/Identity Crisis. (Of sorts.)

Crisis is too strong a word. But I guess it fits.

Anyway, I've been having a dilemma as of late where I'm not sure if I like my fur name. And I already know what most are going to say, "Be what makes you happy." But it's akward to me cause of what the characters mean to me.

Jess is my first and true fursona. A fennec kitsune with bi-colored eyes. But she has my name, my birth name shortened, but very much my real name. It's strange to me, but I changed her middle name to what I thought it should have been, my mom's choice for a middle name for me.

I'm not sure if I want to be known as Jess though in the furry fandom. People choose different names to get away from their mundane life. Damnit, Jess, I love you, but I want change.

So how about Syrin. Syrin is a character I just recently made out of a desire for something that I could probably make a suit out of if I ever become rich. (HAHAHAwhat?) She's a forest dryad, a critter made up of many elements of other critters. A TRUE FRANKENSTIEN. Or something. But I like what she is, she's not as personal to me as Jess, but I like her desgn, her concept, and I like the name.

...But I've had critisisim cause her name is like the horns of the PoPo that we hate to hear. Syrin would be a bad name to be called around certain people. Don't want to stir up the paranoid.

Then there are my story characters. None of which are truely from me other then some take some of my mannerisms, mixed with their own story. They're just... NPC's. For want of a better term.

Syrin or Jess, Syrin or Jess. Or Jess-Jess. Or maybe even just Albino-Kitsune. But god that's long. That is my screen-name everywhere though. ...And I am quite literally an Albino-Kitsune with Jess as my fursona.

I'm looking for input!

Hardly any of you know me. Only a handful know me personally and I doubt any of those people visit these forums and POST SHIT.

So to break it down, I've been going by Jess. She is my fursona, but she uses my name and I'm tired of hearing my own name.

Syrin is a character I want a suit of, she's a newer fursona, but the name makes some unsure. I like the name, I like the character, but I'm worried the name won't catch on and people will dismiss it and just call me Jess. Thus defeating my attempt for change~

Albino-Kitsune is my screen-name. Has been since I was 15, will probably always be my screen-name. But it's long and akward. A good name for a brand for my art. I know some people know of me by that name cause of my art. But would it catch on as a fur-name? I'm not sure how I'd take to being called Albino or Kitsune. The latter of which would just be refering to me by my species and that would be like calling me honkey, in the joking sense.
And any nick-names I can think of that would stem from that are just too silly. ...And Albino-Kitsune is large and cumbersome, wouldn't fit well on a badge like Jess and Syrin does.

I have nothing better to do with my time than to contemplate what is a good name for me.

Runefox

Kitsune of the PC Master Race
I think that's why I decided to go with Runefox.

My first character, Anthonius Reuben Runeblaze, shares a variant of my first name, and it's actually rather embarrassing. I used to use that name in one way or another a lot over the years, and I've since just shortened it to Runefox; My character is no longer a part of my online name. I don't think I'd contemplate changing his name, though; He is what he is.

I'm not sure what to say with regard to your character, but I wouldn't shy away from Syrin just because that's what the police have strapped to their cruisers. See also: Siren

si·ren [sahy-ruhn]
–noun
1. Classical Mythology. one of several sea nymphs, part woman and part bird, who lure mariners to destruction by their seductive singing.

4. an implement of this kind used as a whistle, fog signal, or warning device.
5. any of several aquatic, eellike salamanders of the family Sirenidae, having permanent external gills, small forelimbs, and no posterior limbs.
–adjective
6. of or like a siren.
7. seductive or tempting, esp. dangerously or harmfully: the siren call of adventure.
–verb (used without object)
8. to go with the siren sounding, as a fire engine.
–verb (used with object)
9. to allure in the manner of a siren.

I have the same problem so technically my fursona remains nameless. I think if you like syrin u should go with it(i like that name) but ultimatly ur going to have to decide.

This I know. ^^;;

But, as you have done, I would like input so I can make a better decision. Just hearing what people think of the names helps me. xD

Too true.

Truthfully, the reason I chose the name Syrin for my new cahracter was because of the mythological creature. But I switched the letters for artistic reasons (cause I'm a special person with a special badge of specialness). Later on I kinda cringed when I saw I was two letters off of the word Syringe. And I hate needles. haha. x-x;;

I think I worry that to take on the name of Syrin would put off the impression that I think I attract flocks of men and women. But I don't. Don't want to either. But, eh, I read into things too much.

Shomti

The Oft Mispronounced
I see no reason not to keep the same fursona and change her name. *shrugs* I personally have been using the name Shomti for years and it's not going to change, but if I were in your crisis I'd do what I always do for original names. Pick something about the character, describe it in a word, and alter the word several times, until it is nearly unrecognizable and takes on, to your mind, its own meaning as your character's name. I know how it is to not be able to change your name within a group, though; I've attempted that by calling myself Shomti where I used to identify a long time ago as Yokana, and they just kept calling me Yokana anyway. *shrugs* But new people and new friends will call you by the new name you chose, and if you meet lots of new people then I suggest change it to get them to call you like that.

Well, to me, it's harder to change the name of an existing character.

And I also feel once you get a badge of a character with that one name, they're kinda stuck with that name. xD Not that I mind. I like Jess the way she is.

Runefox

Kitsune of the PC Master Race
It's difficult to change a character once they've been around for a while. It would be kind of like what happened to the Looney Tunes in the transition to Loonatics Unleashed. Completely foreign, perhaps even absurd at first, and never quite sits properly. You know it's not right, and you know what it should be. And because of that, the point behind the change becomes moot, because that's all you can really think about.

You could always take elements of both your characters' names and blend them together to form a fur name, or you could even take Albino-Kitsune and mash that up a bit until it rolls off the tongue a little better. Alitsune, Albine, Kitsino, etc. It might be a good place to start.

NekoFox08

problem with me... I've changed my name from Rocko, to Ritsukakun, to NekoFox. but the name I've always liked was Toby... so soon, I might change my name to [something] Toby, or Toby [something]

What about that middle name you changed? Couldn't you go by your middle name? It could still be an escape from your original identity, with ties back to yourself.

Oh god no. No. I'd rather impale myself with a spoon, no.

Pauline is the worst name ever. I resent my father for naming me that instead of Brooke, like my mother wanted.

Try "Ernest"

I can't go to school for a day without hearing "Ernest goes west!" and so on... *sigh*

No, I meant the one you changed it to. Of course you wouldn't want a name you changed!

Brooke sounds rather pretty, I think =3 And if you were already using it as your middle name before, it wouldn't be too drastic of a change.

In my experience, every time I think of a name I like, I make a new character or use it a lot in video games.

Disgaea is a pleathora of names. XD

I think I'll probably end up getting badges with the name Syrin and go around as that at cons. But I probably won't try to change my names within friend's groups. Just to new people I'll introduce myself as such.

Brooke is a pretty name. ^^
Probably why I'm going to change my middle name to it once I marry. XD;; Completely cut off my past.

But that would be a good idea, now that I think. But, as I mentioned, if I ended up going by Brooke, it would be a whole new character. xD

I think that's what makes it so strange for me. I don't always identify with any one of my characters.

How are you pronouncing Syrin? Is it seer-rin, or sai-rin? Because I personally like the first pronunciation better. It sounds much cooler. But, that's just me.

your paragraph about "Syrin" had me heavily irritaded...

"...But I've had critisisim cause her name is like the horns of the PoPo that we hate to hear. Syrin would be a bad name to be called around certain people. Don't want to stir up the paranoid."

this is why I despise the use of slang in the internet. only by reading on I could see that you meant the police car sirens... duh!

anyway, Syrin sounds good, especially pronounced somewhat "german". :) of course, I also thought of "syringe" first, but is there a word out there that can't be misread in one way or another?
if the 'other' meaning rubs your fur the wrong way, try "Sirin" or "SirinKit". if this demands a new character, slightly alter the last one. :)

hm, Pauline... is Polly the short version of that name? heh* sounds even worse, like the silly character of stupid children's series on TV without any point... hey, could be worse! your parents could have named you after some hotel in a french capital city! XD

Mea'eshana

Just call me Mea
Whatever you change your name too, there are always going to be people that critise and people that accept... that's part of life. I had a different name no less then 4 years ago, that I went by for nearly 10. When I finally did change my name, it took a while for a lot of my friends to get used to this one, but for me this is MY name and no one else has it. It feels right for me, so that's the one I use. If you ever see Mea'eshana or MeaTehKitty (or sometimes just MeaKitty) chances are it's me. Everyone knows that now, and accept me for who I am no matter what name I use. I'm sure your friends will too. ^_^

It's Sai-rin. Like as it airhorn/siren. Or like the mythological creature, Siren.

Pronouncing it like Sear-rin wouldn't sit well with me because, as I mentioned, it's about two clicks off from syringe and I have a slight fear of needles. ^^;;

...Though, I dunno, I might play around with how the word rolls off the tounge.

Haha, sorry about the slang. xD
Always speak with personality, makes things fun~ ;3
(PoPo, 5-O, Pigs, and Titheads in jolly ole' England are all slang for Policia/Police.)

You know, I'm not sure how a German would say Syrin. XD
I'd have to hear one say it one time. I may be Dutch/German by blood but in America anymore, that doesn't mean anything other than what your physical appearance might be. It's uncommon to see those that still strongly celebrate their heritage.

Polly would be the shorter version of that. But I would hit my cousin if he ever mentioned or alluded to my middle name. It's a horrible name and it's taken from a horrible person. Sucks to name your kid after a family member and that kid grow up to despise that person and themselves for having a name taken from them. Peh...

I'm a dork and I will suggest the simple solution to fuse the two. Jessyrin. That way, its certainly different but not like, OUT THERE different. AND you can still use any old badges with the name Jess, like people call her Jess for short or something.
