Furry Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop hating and love the Fur.

I was one of those assholes who believed the hype about furries.

but that all changed this past weekend.

see, I've been spending more time in downtown Pittsburgh since my first Pride event last month. So this past weekend, I figured I'd go to the Strip District and hit the gay bars, before catching a Shock Treatment/Rocky Horror double feature Saturday Night in Dormont.

I ran smack dab into the middle of Anthrocon. And proceeded to have my ignorance checked, and rewired by one of the nicest, most welcoming fandoms I have ever encountered.

met some truly amazing people this past weekend. Ion, Holzy, Ash Kitt, Jethro, Danni, Albi, LaVi, Piroshki, Humphrey164, Aaro, Furryporn, and many others welcomed me with zero judgment, and nothing but genuine friendship. I never once set foot in the convention center, but had a blast partying with everybody on Liberty and Penn Avenue, and in front of the Westin.

One of the things I like most about the fandom has been how friendly the people are! :"3 Glad to hear they treated you well, too~ <3

As for the names. It is easy to remember the ones who had the most impact, but I did take pics and names down on my trusty Ipad. ;)

I got to talking with someone and he told me flat out..."the demographic is about 90% lgbt". That alone was an eye opener. Plus Pittsburgh was full of gorgeous guys all weekend. But really getting to talk with people, helped me better understand, and overcome my own hangups.

it's just roleplay. No different than any other cosplayer or LARPer. Just a fantasy.

Demographic is more 67% LGBT, with 41% of Bisexuals and 26% of gays. Rest goes in straights and the other.

It's not just roleplay; It's the love of anthropomorphism in animal characters. That's it :)

See, still learning! :) <3
i'm 100% gay. And I do like anthropomorphism, not sure how far I'll take the costuming aspect of it yet. I'm still new. And I'm working on costumes and builds for other fandoms at the moment (I'm a big Doctor Who fan).

currently don't have a persona, but it'll likely be some Australian Marsupial (hence the name!), as I have a lotta family down there.

Heya, Bangaroo. I'm so glad we made a good impression. See guys, this is why you need to behave in public. :)

I recognize some of those names you threw out. Ash and I are friends. Said all the bars were crowded as all get-out but it was a fun weekend.

The fandom's tolerant nature draws in folks from all kinds, including a lot of homosexual or trans people. I'm sure you can understand the desire to be accepted, and the cute furry aspect is very welcoming, I think. People here come in all kinds, so of course opinions clash, but on the whole I like it here.

Thanks for giving us a chance, really.

You guys really made it easy! And Ash is adorable. Super cute smile!

the bars were crowded (why I was in town in the first place), but I had fun just hanging out! It was a really fun weekend.

plus, Fernando's (Furnando's) was the place to be on Liberty. It was packed, but the line moved fast, the food was good, the music was pumping, and the company was great!

what part of Va. Are you from? I grew up in Va. Beach. My second favorite city, after the Burgh.

Clearly the international Furry conspiracy to sap and impurify everyone's precious bodily fluids is working then.

Can't blame you, I can remember the most trivial of facts perfectly... but names and lists go right by me xD Maybe I should put a notepad app on the homepage of my phone :s

You met Albi! How cool!

Welcome to the forums.

It takes a lot of courage to swallow your own stereotypes, meet people where they're at, and admit that you were wrong in the past. Kudos, Bangaroo!

So glad to hear that people were welcoming and cool.

Different Albi than I was thinking of, but I know that Albi, too!

Love the idea of the white gryphon with rainbow feathers. So cute.
