What do I need to do to improve the design of my character?

Current design of Melisa.

Try and stick with paler colors. Too many saturated colors hurt people's eyes. Also Look at a color wheel and base the design off of that.
Here are some tools.

You could always begin practicing with 3D characters! It's basically just starting with a stick figure, drawing different size circles for where muscle clumps are located, and then smoothing out and connecting the circles.

Any good drawing of a figure should start with a solid stick figure.

If you need practice, try taking a picture you like of someone else's fursona and draw the stick figure and circles that are underneath.

WARNING: Some strong language in video.

Seems like you already have a pretty clear idea as to what you like/want from your sona so to improve I'd say just keep drawing and refining. This is your sona after all, don't let someone else tell you what to do with it.

That said, if I was where you are right now I'd look for drawings of simular species and identify parts, styles, and techniques that they used which you like and incorporate them into your art. You might consider accessories, perhaps something that fits the characters background or personality. Chose wisely and you may even make the sona easier to draw :)

If you want some specific criticism there are distinctly feral elements mixed with Anthro and I'd suggest moving slightly in one direction or the other to make the design more harmonious. The utters for example are placed and styled very feral, but the character is predominantly Anthro. I'd consider making the utters more Anthro to fit the style, or side-step the issue and add an apron. And a Sun hat!

Interesting, I have never drawn Melisa with a apron and sun hat.

I am not sure what Anthro style of udders would go with Melisa's appearance.

Maybe give her more curves?

I would love to add some nice big curves to Melisa's body, Unfortunately I need to keep the look of Melisa clean for a wider range of uses.
