Furthletes?

Afternoon furs, first post.

How many athletes who also happen to be furries reside on FurAfinnity? What is your sport? Why is it your sport? How long have you been at it? What makes it awesome? etc.

I shall, albeit briefly, lead the way.

I'm a budding mixed martial artist. Have been on-and-off practicing a variety of Martial Arts for a couple of years, but have really been focused on getting myself fighting-fit as of late. Working with a strength coach and an endurance specialist to be as physically capable as possible whilst attending as many classes, practicing, sparring, and getting as cognitively capable as possible. Intending to get my rear kicked in a proper environment by the end of the year.

Love the sport because of the intricacies involved; its the most basic yet most complex form of competition. The rules, however well defined, always leave room for new developments, new tactics, new ideas etc. And if your idea and tactic falls short, or if you neglect other areas due to focusing too much on one area, your whole game goes. Its the nerdiest, most violent sport; excellent combination.

SO FURS: WHAT IS YOUR SPORT!?
HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN YOUR SPORT!?
WHY IS IT YOUR SPORT!?
WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME!?

Go! Go! Go!

Goodness me, that is an awful lot of anger at an attempt to make the apparently terrifying world of athletics more user-friendly to furries.

Are you an athlete that is a furry? Or is your visit purely for the sake of critique?
User-friendly? It was neutral to begin with.

Yes, I am an athlete. hiking and jogging. But if someone called me a furthlete I'd punch them in the face.

Is that a promise? Sounds enthralling!

Hefty hiking or casual hiking?

agreed.
But to answer your question, I enjoy rugby, loads of big sweaty men rubbing against each other.

What can I say? I rarely shy away from the 'retarded'.

If your motivation for Rugby is such, I'm surprised you didn't list No-Gi Brazilian JuJitsu.

I'm in track. I've been fast since I was a little kid. Also, If were in the woods and a bear attacks, it's not going for the track runner.

Alright then, lets reset and I'll give it a go:

Sport Number 1
WHAT IS YOUR SPORT!? Sporting Rifle (and a little bit of pistol and shotgun too)

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN YOUR SPORT!? About 20 years as a competitor, but I'm doing way more coaching in the last 5. Getting old sucks.

WHY IS IT YOUR SPORT!? While not that physical, precision sporting rifle is an incredibly exacting mental sport. Its the culmination of dozens of physical and mental disciplines, from machining to heart rate and breath control to reading physical signs (wind, mirrage) to cartridge selection....a billion variables that have to be reduced to one when the trigger moves and the hammer falls. When your spotter calls "Send it!" its go time...breath, focus, squeeze, BANG! And if you've done it right, 4 seconds later, your spotter calls, "V-Bull!" No time to celebrate, jack the bolt, reload and click on more windage, the mirage is doubling and the wind is light and variable. "Send it!" 60 rounds, 60 minutes. I haven't moved an inch but I'm drenched with sweat.

WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME!? The gestalt of man and machine, the seamless blending of rifle, body, eye and brain....its almost Zen like. When I'm on the line, engaging targets at 1,000 meters, the world just disappears. Its me, the rifle, and the wind. Absolute tunnel vision, absolute clarity of thought. I don't even hear the bang or feel the muzzle blast. And recoil feels like a lover's embrace.

Sport #2
WHAT IS YOUR SPORT!? Foil Fencing

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN YOUR SPORT!? About 2 years, since leaving in college years ago.

WHY IS IT YOUR SPORT!? Its mental, physical, subtle, a ballet and a dance, with just a little bit of violence thrown in. Its stunningly quick. Fencing phrases happen in the blink of an eye. Lunge, parry, counter-parry, ripost, redouble, envelopment, lunge, parry, counter-parry TOUCHE! Et la, fou! About half a second, start to finish.

(I think Quetzledrake knows what I'm talking about....)

WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME!? Dude....you're whacking away on an opponent with a metal sword! The fact that they have one too, makes it VERY interesting. Engard! Et tu pret? ALLEZ! This ain't no SCA or LARP.

Sport: Rowing
How Long Has It Been Your Sport?: 4 years
Why?: I did a beginner rowing camp back in Grade 8, and just kept going from there up to club and school competitions. It's a great all-around sport that gives the advantages of aerobic and anaerobic exercises with every stroke.
What Makes It Awesome?: Real athletes row, everyone else just plays games.

Does extreme churning count as a sport? A good portion of the community could probably churn wonderfully with one arm. Such amazing strength for their dominant arms...

Not an athlete, most certainly not a "Furthlete". I've played sports plenty (use to be a good goalie in Lacrosse, for instance), but I just don't have the time to tack it on to my already extensive list of hobbies.

Hawt Dawg
Sport: Soccer
How Long Has It Been Your Sport?: 10 years
Why?: I became very interested in my nation's sport and I liked everything around it. It's easy, inexpensive, and a great sport.
What Makes It Awesome?: The beauty of the game, the passion, the tradition...everything!

I also play Baseball, but I have to gather my thoughts for that....

American Football. 4 years. I did it because of peer and family pressure, and because I thought it would be fun to do my favorite sport to watch.

Hur dur dur i liek furthall and soccfur.

I agree with Shenzebo, using the word 'fur' into every single word possible is really ducking annoying, voiding on the immature.

On topic, hunting any kind of animal and fishing will always be my favorite sport, but jogging fits nicely too.
