How and when did you 'discover' the furry fandom?

Hah! That one CSI Episode around when it first aired... Yeah... First impressions weren't the best.
But, I will say that I don't believe it's fair to judge a group based on something as fictitious as a TVshow, so I did more research!

I found an interesting group of people that, sadly, I was far to anxious and shy to interact with...

About 20 years ago I entered the right terms into Google Image Search while looking for a picture of an anthropomorphic cat-woman and discovered, I believe, Yerf which was a clean Furry art site. From there I found the VCL and it went downhill from there. I had essentially been into Furries as characters since the late-1980s but didn't know there were others into them like I was until then.

FWIW, I was a moderator on the VCL Forum for a while.

Years ago I was channel surfing and came across a TV show named Taboo, and it was featuring Furries. It was the first time I had heard about it. And I thought, "Why is this taboo? This is cool!"

I think it was close to when I was turning 18. I mean, I've liked anthro animals since I can remember, but me finding out about the fandom... I was 17... possibly 16, but I don't think so. I remember I was looking at world of warcraft art in deviantart, and I really liked how people drew taurens. It sort of went on from there.

Today, after seeing someone necro a thread from 2008, I remembered I have a fur affinity account from like way back, so I recovered it. Turns out, I registered on the main site 11 years ago. Too bad that account doesn't have any favorites or people I follow.

Randomly came across some anthro artwork and was like... "Oh hey... I wrote stories with characters like this". Discovered they were called furries and was like "oh that's what a furry is... Huh that's actually pretty cool" and that was that xD

That was all in/around 2010

I'm not a furry, never have been, but I didn't realize there was an actual fandom dedicated to it until around 14-16.

"Why does everyone get mad that I'm a human on Furcadia? It's supposed to be about roleplaying and using your imagination!"
"Oh... Oh dear... Well... for some people, it's not just a... it's more of a lifestyle, for them."
"Wut?"
*Camera fades to black*
*Scene fades in*

"Also you should google bestiality if you want to know what it means!"

That octopus man.
He got it

Honest trailers video on FNF I think it was. Said something about furries and showed a fursuiter. Instead of being weirded out I was intrigued and did googling. Now here we are

Yep, this was my introduction, too. When I watched that episode, I found the fursuits interesting, though. I've seen a few fursuiters at anime conventions and the Renaissance Festival. There was also an episode of "My Strange Addiction" that had a girl on there who wanted to be in her fursuit all the time because she felt more confident. I did not find it as weird as the fact that her family did not seem to wonder why she felt no confidence without her suit.

I see people in fursuits and think, "Wow, wish I was confident enough to do that."

Edit: I think it was 2003, so I was 14.

As someone who still struggles with interacting with others, I understand why some people feel more confident when they are in suit. I did cosplay in the past and I found that that helped me a little bit!
I dunno, I just don't like how some people treat it like it's so weird. But, oh well. There will always be that perception, I suppose...

Stumbled across it in the mid-90s while browsing the earlier internet for fantasy art and some crossover works led to sites more dedicated to furry. Kinda stayed a lurker for years, just passively following the community until around 2010 when I finally started going to meets and such. Made my first fursuit in January of 2013 in a case of "I can make that..." and things have just progressed from there (14 total suits make so far).

Oddly, I'm really not all that active with the local group these days beyond the occasional suit commission. Most of the other furs I used to do stuff with have gone their separate ways, either moving away or having families and other responsibilities taking up their time. Most of the current local furry group is much younger & somewhat cliquey, and I have a hard time making any real connection with them.

If the definition of "furry" is "a fan of anthro characters", then that would mean I was one my entire life, with Sonic the hedgehog and Pokémon being part of my life since I was a baby.
But if you're talking about when I discovered the fandom, then that'd be somewhere around 2015 or so when I saw "furry cringe" videos on Youtube and thought it seemed kind of unfair to make fun of people genuinely having fun in suits of their own characters, so I later downloaded the Furry Amino app and got my journey started on there.

To be honest I think the first time I was exposed to furries was when I watched an American Dad episode that had fursuiters in it, and there was this one guy dressed as a car sensually running a few over.

The first time I heard the term "furry" was when I was 13. It was Valentine's day at school and I overheard some of my classmates cringing and snickering after someone mentioned the word in reference to the animal pictures on the cards.

The first time I was exposed to the fandom I was 14 pushing 15 on a now discontinued PlayStation 3 game called PlayStation Home. I was catfished by an adult man and lured into the nsfw side by another. I wouldn't say it was a great first impression.

I was seventeen when I made an acquaintance from a new school who happened to be a furry. I invited him over to my house and we watched furry cringe videos. I barely thought any of the clips were cringy and found many of the fursuits cute and endearing. I ended up joining Furry Amino and made a "fursona" I couldn't care less about. I spent a few years struggling with coming up with one and I kept leaving over frustration about it.

After discovering more interests and learning to not care about what others thought and what was popular, I was finally able to make a fursona and other characters I felt a connection with, so I've been in the fandom this time for 20 months now. I lost connection to my first "legit" fursona, Jack, but my new one, Dusty very easily filled the void.

I first saw fursuiters back in 2015 at Dundee's comic con, I honestly didn't think much of it then. Following that Zootopia was released and it was a steady decline from Zootopia fics to general furry fandom.
