I don't actually understand what a fursona is

Heyo, I'm new-ish to the furry community, sort of. I had a fursona back in like 2004 and have changed it many times over the years before giving up on having one altogether. At this point I'm not even sure I understand what a fursona is, or why I tried to have one.

Can you still be a furry without having a fursona? What IS a fursona exactly? It seems to have some emotional significance and fill some sort of need or empty hole that a lot of people have in their lives, creating something that people can connect to or dissociate with, and I guess I've just tried making one for the sake of having it, but never felt like I needed one?

Am I overthinking it or am I just trash? Also sorry I have an intense passion for psychology. LOL

(EDIT: Also related, I find it easier to create fursonas for other people and associate other people with animal characters than I do myself, maybe if I create some kind of comical parody version of myself I will find it easier to make a fursona? Who knows)

Ok this is something along the lines of asking A person what is love (more extreme example) Each persons beliefs of what a fursona is varies slightly.

To me it's A representation of ones self. I took into many things when making mine.
  • (Coyote depictions in native american & aztec mythology/folklore)
  • (One he is from the spanish american war A time of engineering feats & weapons developments that have drastic affects on today. Aswell with that it was A noble deed done but for partly malicious beginning intentions[Getting cuba independence from spain but initially wanting to go to war to gain power & willing to fake A attack on innocents to do so but not doing so because.])
  • (Physical traits such as having my right eye scarred over to symbolize that i'm left eye dominant)
  • (Having A grin that shows deviancy but with A tone of wanting to honestly help. [I often laugh when deviantly when I have come up with A offensive joke & also will help anyone I see that I think I can help & needs it.])
Basically I tried to make it so people can get A perception of my personality by triggering memories. They can know what I am like before they meet me a little & if that is something they want to see present in a friend they can reach out to me.

Well, to me it's just a character I use to occasionally express myself online in pointless but fun ways. Besides what it looks like, the personality doesn't perfectly reflect myself, which is something to note, as other personas/fursonas (whatever you want to call them) are sometimes almost exact representations of someone's personality or who they wish to become. Other people take it more seriously, which I don't personally understand, but perhaps some people are more prone to becoming very involved in their thoughts and ideas.

You can totally be a furry without a fursona, after all, the barebones definition of a furry is someone with an interest in anthropomorphic art and shit like that.

As for what a fursona is, it really depends person to person. Some people have a fursona but are distant from them, some people feel like they're actively their fursona, really just do whatever man. Personally, my sona is just an exaggeration of my irl personality and is kinda just me, but as a fuzzy alien :^P

It can represent you, or you can make a completely different character. It's 100% up to you.

To me, your fursona is a character that you've created that you have a special connection to (for a lack of a better term). Like, a character that you really care about. Know what I'm saying?

I did a good try and came up with something that I think I like, and I feel like it represents me a bit, just exaggerated.

Made it a bird-dragon-weasel thing, colored and ivory white because I am pale, gave it spots on the face and shoulders and back because I get hella blemishes there sometimes, has brown tufts because my hair is about that color, huge eyebrows because mine are super big and bushy, tiny hands because I have tiny hands, super skinny and lanky because I am lanky, and golden eyes because my eyes are hazel and look that color in direct sunlight.

It's agender because I wish I could be too, even though I'm a chick. Everything about being female is already frustrating in real life, but I wouldn't want to be a dude either, so I just decided to opt-out on gender altogether here. LOL
