Pick the starter you like the most.
But if you prefer people playing the game for you, Torchic will suffer in the first gym unless you get him evolved into Combusken, and he can then be expected to excel in the second gym. Mudkip will do great for both the first and third gyms.

I've used to play a lot of Emerald.
Pretty sweet stuff. Tip? Catch all the possible legendary. Transfer them all the way to ORAS, trade legendaries for Melodetta and Genesect or other hard to find Legendaries
