Is Felt a Good Option For Reptile Suits?

I want to make a semi-realistic monitor lizard partial, but I’m having trouble finding suitable materials. All the pleather I’ve seen is the wrong texture, shag fur seems unsuitable for a reptile, etc… Would it be reasonable to use something like felt to create the pattern while having a mostly smooth texture? I would really like advice from people who work with the material often or have made reptile fursuits in the past

Hmm, I think you can use felt for your suit.
Consider a hard (Korean felt) 1.2 mm - the thickness of the sheet. They have a wide variety of colors.
Sewing a felt suit completely is a bad idea, pellets will quickly appear on it, and it will be worn to holes. You can use it to create the texture on the surface of a durable fabric.
But it probably won't be realistic. Unless you use monochrome felt to create scales, and sew the skin on top.
If you wanted a crocodile - such a layered suit (fabric + felt + skin) seems to be an interesting solution, crocodiles have large scales. But monitor lizards...
