Is this term offensive?

Hey all.

So people have many words to describe many things. And yet, sometimes, words can hurt, as they can be offensive. There are also words that people have taken as compliments and good vibes. But there is one word that I've been a little curious about, and I would like to have someone answer one question about the word...

Is the term "Femboy" an offensive term?

I have seen two different possibilities: That Femboy is used to identify a man with traditionally feminine features, and that the word is a negative way to describing the same kind of male.

I don't like offending others, even if it is inevitable, so I want to make sure this word is okay or not okay.

Just a side note, I don't use the word "Trap", because that does sound a bit more negative....

What do all of you think?

I personally don't find it offensive. But everyone is different so what doesn't offend me might offend someone else.

Honestly, everyone has a different temperament.
I met people who found the term gay offensive and prefer homosexual and vice versa. Some people prefer lesbian, others like sappho. So things like that are gonna vary from person to person.

I personally don't see it as offensive, unless you're inserting someone into the label against their will.

The only time it’s offensive is when used toward trans women — as they are women and not feminine boys. This is where the controversy around it comes from.

As long as you’re not using the term toward trans women or feminine men without consent… it’s fine.

I don't believe there's any issues with "femboy". I'm happy to call myself that and be called it, and I guess context is the key but assuming an obvious friendly tone I see no problems with the word as it's just a description really: feminine boy. Obviously some idiots will use it as an insult, but to them the mere concept of a feminine male is anger inducing so they'd use any word to insult and their opinions don't matter. <laugh> But yeah, usually it's not offensive at all...that would be the other "F" word to describe us. <giggle>

As for "trap" though, that one unfortunately might be offensive, as unless I'm mistaken it comes from the VERY WRONG origins that a transsexual at a bar/club is trying to "trap" a male by luring them in pretending to be a girl and them BAM, surprise penis! Obviously this is BS...they're at the place for the same reason as everyone else and merely existing isn't some ploy to trick homophobic men, but sadly as I know it that's the root for that term. Not a good reference, so maybe avoid that one. <wink>

I can say I don't see a likelihood of the fandom taking offense to the usage of the term. However, a big part of what makes something seem offensive is the intent and delivery. Using it in a blatantly derogatory manner to taunt or insult someone will surely add stigma to the word, even in groups where it's generally accepted.

People have done this with neutral and even positive terms, which examples of are not hard to find. Quite ironically, there are negative and hurtful terms that have also been turned into being more accepted for uses in some scenarios.

People nowadays are experts at putting any possible terms to be offensive or not.

In my case, when anything I'm telling is potentially offensive, I try not to forget to supplement, "No offense, by the way."

This world had came to a state you have to put defeses even on your speech. That's how it is, I suppose!

Can't speak for the rest of furmanity, but seems ok on this forum at least. But I agree with Nexus, any term even if generally accepted can be offensive if delivered with the intent to do so.

Well..... I'll give these two scnenarios to you, if helpful:

1) You walk into a bar, and a big, burly 6-foot-tall scruffy looking guy says something to you like: "get out of here you little Femboy" with a frown on his face as he throws his fist down on the counter when he's looking at you - then, that's probably an offensive use of the term in all likelihood.

2) If on the other hand, the same big burly guy (above) says something like: "you got a nice package you little Femboy" with a smile on his face as he leans over and caresses you in front of the bar, then..... it's probably safe to say it's not an offensive usage.

So I'd concur with the user above and say it depends on how it's used..... of course, if you know the person well who's saying it and the first scenario above plays out and he's smiling at you when he does it, then...... it's probably not offensive.

As close friends often say harsh things to one another in jest, which is meant to be taken lightly when heard.

It's kinda the same way kids on the playground yell out ''GAY'' as an insult, as it's meant 2 mean you're not strong and powerful!

If someone calls himself a femboy, that's fine! But if he sees himself as unmanly, weak, or otherwise not conventionally adhering 2 what society expects a man 2 be, he could take it negatively!

It's been used as a slur due to my being trans to my face for the past decade offline, so admittedly I tend to be weary when I hear folks use it tbh. The folks who debate whether femboy is a slur or not tend to be trans, not about whether or not being viewed as feminine is a bad thing, as it's used both in the context of female + boy (at transmen) or feminine + boy (towards transwomen) throughout time.

Personally I don't pay attention to what others choose to identify with; it's just a term that you shouldn't ever call someone else nor their characters without them doing so first. They might be heavily uncomfortable with it

I don't know much about the word, other than someone in a Discord server had a huge hard-on for femboys. I don't understand what femboys are, but I'm with others in this section, the context of which it's used means a lot.

I think it's important to note that determining whether something is offensive or not depends on the offense taken by a receiver. I haven't seen much of anyone actually get offended by the term but it's not unrealistic to assume at least someone somewhere at some time has been offended by the word "femboy".

Not unbelievable as some people are offended by the thumbs up emoji for some reason

I think it's mostly just "trap" you've gotta worry about. Just don't go misgendering nobody cause that's not cool.
