Akira gets my vote on this. It paved the way for modern anime as we know it, as well as served as one of the Wachowski Brothers' main inspirations for The Matrix Trilogy. Awesome story, fast-paced action, bits of dark humor, and even some characters that you can (in a weird way) identify with, Akira is a true classic.
