Ah, didn't know you were with the military, great stuff all around! Appreciate your continued service to the country.

And yeah, I do try to be thank all veterans I can reasonably identify without coming off as too much of like a suck up and such. Like trying not to drag them out of what they are doing for me to awkwardly thank them sort of thing. It's a bit of a weird sort of balance sometimes.

They did away with the draft a few months before I was eligible. This was right at the end of the Vietnam war. It would have been a bad time to go in as there was a glut of military at the time. They went ahead and drew the draft numbers for 1973. Mine was 40 so I would have been gone. I had prepped by going to see a navy recruiter ahead of time because I didn't want to be a ground pounder in a rice paddy. My father and uncle each did 17 years in the navy and air force respectively. My grandfather was an artillaryman in WWI.

But without a doubt! My favourite wartime story came from a little old lady of 99 who I worked in a charity shop with( She'd be 108 now bless her) who was a nurse during the war. She recalled in perfect clarity watching a V1 buzzbomb making it's way across the channel towards my home town and then watching as a RAF pilot came out of nowhere. Flew alongside this bloody bomb and then used his wingtips to flip it into the sea before going off again to rejoin the aerial battle. .. I am still awestruck.
