However, the mass majority of people that drink alcohol view it as an occasional treat.

If you’re afraid that you will be the type of person that will abuse it, then abstain from alcohol. Go ahead.

I don’t have that fear. I know I can handle it. Therefore, I’ll have my glasses of wine in moderation without any lasting damage.

Considering how my mother was like drinking then I'll stay away as I know that some how the addiction is hereditary.
