My old maths work book (I think) I repurposed as my sketchbook, as such viewing it is like staring directly into the mind of a madman

And that's where practise comes in, over the past 3 days I've drawn this head reference roughly 100 times

True that. I just didn't stick with it.

Alright got it working, had to resize because the image was too big a file. this was the first thing I tried to draw, I will confess at the time (about 8 years ago) I used a image I found as a reference, cba trying to find it, but I didn't trace anything. I was just testing how well I can draw from sight. I never ended up finishing it, and never found the motivation to try and draw since.

That's nicely done for not tracing!

Ty, I still feel like drawing from sight like this is cheating though. Sometimes I do wonder how good at drawing I would be now if I didn't stop trying.
I draw from sight, all of the time, there's nothing wrong with it. I'm wondering much the same, what if a decade ago I'd stayed in art school, and not made the biggest mistake of my life to date and moved.

Not so, that's how I taught myself. Drawing from sight is better that tracing in my view because it allows your own personal 'Style' to develop.

In my view, drawing from sight is better than tracing because they’re two entirely different skills. Tracing is a more computer-like skill, training you to execute a path laid out for you to perfection. A useful skill, but irrelevant to art IMHO. Drawing you from sight teaches you to process artistic shapes in your head, letting you adapt them yourself.
TLDR I agree.

I should share some of my early efforts...
