I think you get a notification when someone posts to a thread you are following but doesn't keep notifying you every time someone posts. It just does it once and that's it.

Yeah i think it happens with me too.
I think maybe the notification system would be better if it didnt set all to "read" after opening the dropdown menu and instead only lowers the count when you click on them.
