You know somebody who is really good at drawing? GentleButter! They do commissions for great prices.
But if you'd prefer to make your own you could try checking references.

Oh I'm used to drawing stuff myself all the time but sometimes I mess up, and I need practice drawing my own character. I'll consider commissions later though.

But when it comes to drawing faces it can be really hard to get the promotions just right. I suggest watching tutorials on youtube, or checking refs. Those have always helped me out.

I need more practice over all. I do very well, but I think I get ahead of myself sometimes. Unfortunately I'm not the tutorial type, I'm stubborn and try to figure it out myself most of the time.

I do the same all the time. Whever you catch yourself getting ahead just stop and take a 5 minute break.
It's good to have some grit, but just going into something blind is never a good idea, and leads to frustration. I suggest giving one or two a try.
