Seriously the first fairy gym was the first time in GENERATIONS that I was worried about a fight. I hadn’t been so knocked off balance since third gen.

Also you could also just use psychics which beat everything and were weak to bug which had no good moves...
Eh, people exaggerate that. Psychic only looked overpowered on paper if you go by the type chart. It doesn't help that the two legendaries with Overpowered stats and Movepools happened to be Psychic types.

Psychic may not have had weaknesses, but Most psychic type pokemon in Gen one had a second type to give them weaknesses. Aside from Mewtwo, the pure psychic types were either so frail that they would go down pretty easily to any good physical attack or they just sucked in general. Hello Hypno.
Don't get me wrong, they were pretty strong, and I think sometimes people would run more then one on a team. But their strength had more to do with Gen 1 combining Special Defense and Special Attack into one stat, and making Amnesia, a move that basically doubles the damage you deal with Sp Atks and halves the damage you take from them.

Also most Pokémon in Gen 1 were poision which psychic was strong against and physical and special type moves worked differently from now.
