No.
Event's were absolutely HORRIBLE before wifi and internet Access were common.
Some pokemon were horribly uneven to obtain, and even some Pokemon in the game are useless unless you get such and such event that get's this exclusive move the pokemon NEEDS, like Chansey and Blissy. That don't learn Wish Naturally for some reason, and Game Freak won't let them learn by breeding FOR SOME REASON.
You legit can't use the best healer in the game without that event.

They're a little more decent now, but fuck that old shit.
