Littlerock's little hobby

So I'm not too sure if this counts as a sketchbook, but I suppose I'll try the hard way to find out. I like to make miniatures in the name of being bored! They're more or less tiny little art pieces, for the most part are rather quickly made, and most of them end up as gifts. My sculpting tools vary typically include sewing needles, paintbrushes, mechanical pencils, emery boards, Exacto knives, and toothpicks. All pieces so far have been made from Sculpey III translucent, painted with acrylics, sealed with either clear nail polish, or Testors matte aerosol lacquer. Comments and critiques are welcome! I suppose I'll update this with new and old pieces when I get photos worth sharing.

First off is my most recent, a tiny little banana! Close-up you can see that it's got a nasty texture, but that's not apparent in real life, considering it's size.

For size reference, here is it next to some real bananas. It's just longer than my thumbnail is wide.

A while ago, I also made a small steak, cooked on one side, raw on the other.

I also recently made a chibi-style rock python, and a semi-realistic garden slug. Here they are posing with the banana:

And the rockie on his own.

So, do they look okay? And does anybody have suggestions as to what I should try to make next? All crit is welcome, and thank you for your time! :>

The hell am I reading, here?
I was wondering what was up with your avatar. The texture was freaking me out, but it didn't look like it was fake. Your stuff's pretty impressive!

edit: You could probably make decent money doing custom miniatures for tabletop gamers that use them.

Yeessssssssssssss I like these a lot. Especially the steak. I'm hoping you make yourself some meaty earings or something. Fancy meaty earings.

I don't know what kind of critique I could ever offer you here, but I love these!
Gosh you're sweet, Gib! :*>
Holy crap that banana's tiny! I love it.
It's the smallest thing I've made yet, and thanks!

Yeah, I don't know why I made that avatar. Glad to hear that it looks like real meat though, thanks! :>
And that is a rad idea, I could use to make some money, I'm definitely looking into that.

OH MY GOSH I NEED MEAT EARRINGS!

I dug through some old photos and found a few of a pin that I made for my bestie last year or so. It's an eye switch from the Legend of Zelda, based on the style seen in Wind Waker. I don't have this one anymore, and the only photos I have of it seem to have been taken with a potato...

These are great! As a person who used to paint miniature figures, I know how hard it is to get some effects with paints n stuff. Keep posting these adorable bananas

O christmas cock, o christmas cock, I surely shall create thee~

Gosh thanks Coffeecup! I'd like to see your paintjobs :0
I would pay money to own meat earrings like those. :I

I'll actually probably have a few sets in my etsy sometime after the new year, I just gotta pick up some findings and a magnifying glass. Tiny steaks!

There'll be an update here later today, I finished a few gift minis earlier. I wonder, would anybody be interested in a how-it's-done sequence, or wip photos?

Sweet. Keep us posted. Provided they don't end up super out of my price range, I am totally serious about being willing to put money behind mini-meat jewelry.

also yes, progress photos!

Omfg then yes. I would buy a pair of meat earrings in a heartbeat.

Those details are so small, damn. You either have very good fine motor control, or you're a wizard.

Well, I never got my letter to Hogwarts.

Anyhow, an update.
I know that Faf's not fond of religious figures, but I'm posting the following anyway, under grounds that this is the first time I've tried making human figures, and it's been a real challange for me. I'm making these as a gift for my Mum, who already displays a creche this time of year anyway. The cats broke one of the three kings, so I wanted her to have a set that was harder for a cat to break. Crit is very much appreciated! I can see so many flaws with Mary in particular; for a while she looked like a cliche elderly native american woman, but I tried to make her look younger. Instead, she's got a bit of a |3 face going on there that's visible in certain lighting. Ah, well.

Because I wanted a consistent skin color, I decided to make the fleshy parts of the figurines out of colored Sculpey III, which ultimately feels like a mistake. Colored clays are much softer and more malleable than the translucent variety, which, while it's easier to form and faster to warm up to working temperature, it also quickly looses it's fine details when nudged on accident, and an hours work can be bumped off with a twitch. That being said, caffeine is not a good idea when working with this stuff. Live and learn.

Some things I've learned:
With Sculpey, underbaking is dangerous, as it leads to underset figures that crumble easily. Slightly overbaking is actually recommended in certain applications, but there's a limit. Furthermore, it's typically better to bake a piece at a lower than optimal temperature for longer than recommended, especially with very thick pieces. This technique allows the clay to heat slowly but thoroughly, allowing the entire piece to finish setting at once, rather than being hard on the exterior and raw in the middle.

Unbaked: (the slug is made of a combination of the two clays here, scrap bits, actually, so the color is different.)

Here we have very overbaked clay, but not so much that actual damage has been done. You can see how much color difference there is between the toasted stuff and the normally set stuff. This was a fault on my part, I had forgotten to move the top rack in the oven to the middle, and thus the figures got hotter on top than needed. I also set the timer for a few too many minutes, forgetting that Mary here is not solid clay; she has an aluminum foil core. This is perfectly safe and sturdy method that saves on weight, materials, and baking time, but the overall baking time must be calculated for the clay's thickness, not the piece's. Mary and the slug here show signs of overbaking, but the banana is done just right. In this harsh lighting, all of Mary's little flaws are very visible ;v;

Some paint and one tiny Christ child later, we have this! In lieu of a halo that the cats could remove (which has happened before), I've painted a fractured-looking halo on each figure's head out of Testor's gold and silver metallic paint. Lovely stuff, two of my favorite paints.
(Mary can balance a baby on her head, and use a bananaphone. I will never grow up.)

And finally, prototype steaks for peg-back earrings. I have learned that the paint scheme needs to change a bit, and that I should've made them for french wires instead. I did buy a french wire starter set, but I don't have the meat ready for those yet. The little steaks seen here are one-sided, bare on the backs for the earring peg. I do not yet have a peg-back earring making set, so these will be waiting.

Coming up in the next update, Joseph, a cock, and more meat!
Thank you for your time :>

Oh gosh I loooove this! The texture is wonderful, excellent job Coffee! Perhaps we could collab one day. :>
I haven't done anything in a year or so so I'd be pretty rusty, and I'm not sure how a collab would work with such a distance :V
If there is a way though I'd be down with it. I'll take more pictures tomorrow of my other models for attentionwhoring shits n' giggles.

I was really surprised coming to this thread. Those are really cool miniatures. The steaks are great. The slug eating the banana was funny.
